WESLACO - Whenever anyone thinks of quarterbacks for the Weslaco Panthers, the names Sone Cavazos and Bobby Lackey come to mind. But, there is a new quarterback at Weslaco High that people will remember for quite some time.


Dylan DeLeon, a senior, prepares for his third season as the signal caller for the Panthers and in two years has already shattered all the passing records in Weslaco history. But, the biggest accomplishment prior to the start of his senior season is that DeLeon was selected as a first-team quarterback of the 5A Texas football Region Four All-Region super team.


"Dylan is making a name for himself and being selected to this team is a tremendous honor and I am very proud of him," said Weslaco head football coach Tony Villarreal. "He was on a list with players from schools such as Austin Westlake, San Antonio Roosevelt, and Converse Judson. Dylan is the leader of this team and I expect big things from him"


DeLeon said that he was not aware he was selected until his father told him about it.


"I was at a 7-on-7 game and my dad came up and congratulated me about my selection," said DeLeon. "I had no idea what he was talking about and when he finally told me that I was the first-team quarterback on the All-Region team, I could not believe it. I never expected to receive that honor with some of the great quarterbacks coming from up north of here. But, I am excited and honored to be selected."


DeLeon had some huge games for the Panthers in the regular season during his junior season, as well as the playoffs. But, the game in which DeLeon shined the most was the regional quarterfinals against San Antonio Madison, who was ranked number six in the state in class 5A and possessed the number one defense in the state as well. DeLeon passed for 230 yards on 10-of-21 passing and threw for four touchdown passes.


"Coming into the game against Madison, we were aware that their defense was stout because they had only given up one passing touchdown all year and only gave up six points a game."


"But, Dylan took control of his team and had the game of his life. That was definitely his breakout game by far. He was able to make the big plays and pick apart the best defense in the state of Texas. He definitely had ice water in his veins and was cool under fire."


Villarreal expects DeLeon to have a great season and feels that he can help fill a huge void with star tailback Mishak Rivas graduating.


"We have a 3,000 yard void to fill with Mishak gone," said Villarreal. "However, I feel that Dylan can fill that void. He has the potential to pass for over 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 this season and possibly throw for 30 touchdowns."


DeLeon said that he is ready to lead the so called new Panthers this year and expects big things.


"This is a new year and the new Panthers are going to make some noise this year," said DeLeon. Everyone expects us to have a down year since we will not have Mishak to carry the load. People are waiting to see us fail and feel that we will not have a good season."


"Well, we are out to prove all of the naysayers wrong. Don't get me wrong, it was truly an honor to play with Mishak and he was a great asset to the Panthers. But, we know that this is a new team and we have to move on."

*Oline should be weslaco strongest strengths for the upcoming season, these guys are beasts' and they should pave the way for the running game and give dylan plenty of time to make something happen*

DEFENSE:

Jacob Ponce (DB) Honorable Mention

I believe we got a few guys back on the dline, the rest will be filled in with jrs and upcoming sophmores.

Other players who got some playing time throughout the season and showed promise:

Alex Alejandro (MLB) Would come in and play when we were blowing out the b'ville schools, was in almost every tackle. Expect good things from him.

Chapa (TE) Got some playing time as well, believe had a few catches in the madison game. Has shown in 7on7 what a threat he can be. Only a soph. 6'1 190

John Rojas (RB/WR) Freshman, upcoming soph. Speed to burn. Got some playing time on the varsity and showed alot of promise. Expect some noise from alot of no namer freshman (upcoming soph) that will be starting on varsity this upcoming season for the panthers.

All and all expect some no namers to make some noise for the panthers, lots and lots of talent moving on up and mix it in with some of these guys we have coming back from a 10-3 2007 panther season. I might be missing a few guys, this is the best i could think of if any of the panther fans want to correct me or add on to this, by all means ...

i'd imagine he could be if he works hard the rest of the off-season and then takes care of business during the season. he's very accurate and throws a very catchable ball. 2000 yds passing doesn't seem like it's impossible after having watched him come up. sone and lackey still ahead of him though.

So losing two linemen, is worse than losing a guy who rushed for over 3,000 yards?

The analogy you used is not a good one. The OSU Cowboys were 10-2 when Thurman Thomas graduated in 87. They were 10-2 Barry's Junior year in 88 the only year he started. He went directly into the draft for what should have been his senior year.

not at all corb. either you are ignoring, or refuse to give credit to what those guys did. take a look at their highlights, they were amazing their whole careers down here and will probably continue to be the rest of their college career. the falcons offense revolved around their dominance on the line. you will miss them more than we will miss shak, although the impact that both had on the game will be missed.

I've seen a glimpse of the offense. They will be fine. You need to be more concerned about our defense than our offense. The defense was still adjusting to the system last year. It worked out fairly well from what I saw.

heres the deal wp...
Atkinson, Benavides, great athletes, two of the best to ever pass through LF, and they will be greatly missed

but the fact of the matter is that Ford adjusted his offense to play to his strengths, his offense doesn't usually need to have a lot of running game or a lot of sit back in the pocket QB style, the spread is supposed to be a quick-hit passing team and the run game is used to offset the pass coverage
this year ford will have most of his skill players coming back, 3 QBs to choose from, a strong rusher coming back and a couple good receivers coming back with good hands
Ive said it before and Ill say it again, if LF can put a decent line together the offense will be extremely explosive

If you think that our two tackles are bigger in the game than your RB, fair enough, but it might be both of us looking at the glass half full

personally I think that if you lose a guy that rushes for 3300 yards in a system that relies about %80 on the run is a bigger loss

Shak is a bigger loss period. LF's coaching staff can adjust better than Coach V and his staff.

Well i think one thing we can agree on is players like mishak for weslaco and atkinson and benavides for los fresnos are irreplaceable, and only come around ever so often. You can't groom players to be the athletes that these guys were. It will be interesting to see what adjustments will be made to fill in the voids. Pretty sure ford will go back to passing first, running second, considering the two big boys are no longer on the line paving the way for mendez. We all know after that harlingen game he made some adjustments and went more to the running game to utilize the talent with the two big boys and let mendez run wild.

And look for tony v to utilize the talent he has at qb, maybe go 50/50 with the run and the pass. But ofcourse thats left to be seen. Though add in that dylan can be just as much as a threat running the ball as he is passing it, he can run the ball better then some rbs out there. We got some talent coming back for us in the running game and also some new additions so it should be interesting to see what tony v will do.

I'm actually not concered with the panther offense at all, i know we can and will move the ball. We practically got the whole line back and they got the size and experience to pave the way. Where i am concerned a lil is with the D, we will be young in that dept. But so far those guys are participating in 7on7 and gaining valuable practice and experience. So they should be a step ahead when two a days come around in august.

Should be an interesting season in this district, we'll see how it goes.

I think we should look at how teams have done AFTER they lose an impact player.

How did Econodemes do after Ryan Richardson left?
How did Memorial do after Stephens left?
How did Hanna do after Tony Ellis left?.....

So you can see why a lot of people are skeptical when it comes to Weslaco.


Now, lets look at other teams.

PSJA loses their RB's all the time, and they still manage
EE loses players all the time, and they still manage
Los Fresnos has lost big time players while Coach Ford has been here, they've managed.
Port Isabel still manages.
Harlingen still manages

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that since before the Mishak era, Weslaco was in bad shape and now that he's gone, they have a lot to prove. So it's yet to be determined, which is why people are skeptical.
