the scrimmage vs LV sucked.
it was like 15 plays first string, 15 plays second string and that's it.

It took about an hour and 15 minutes because there was long breaks.
RH:
O looked really good. Need to work on passing a bit, but good. Offense is about where they were at last year at this time.
D was alright. Secondary was good on coverage. Line and LB had some problems with runs up the gut, but outside runs were all but shutdown. I expect that to be fixed ASAP. The line are all returning starters, save one. LB's got got good play time last year . . . we'll see.
Offense: A Defense: B
LV:
LV had some O line problems. If they can fix that, and the QB gets some confidence, they will be alright. RB had alright speed, but his vision was not too great. WR's needed to catch more balls.
The defense was alright against the run, but not so much against the pass.
Both sides of the ball are going to have to work hard.
Offense: B+ Defense: B-

Rio Hondo No. 5 in preseason poll Comments 0 | Recommend 1 August 23, 2008 - 5:41PM By ARMANDO GARZA RGVSports.com
RIO HONDO - There was a time when the Rio Hondo Bobcats were an afterthought in the eyes of Valley high school football pundits. Boy, do times change.
With a recent run as impressive as nearly any other team regardless of classification, the Bobcats are now regarded as one the premier 3A programs in South Texas.
And voters at Valley Freedom Newspapers noticed, ranking the 'Cats No. 5 in this year's preseason Top 10 poll.
With wins piling up and a couple of 32-3A championship trophies in the case (two in the past three years), Rio Hondo knows how to win.
So naturally, each season brings higher expectations. Rio Hondo is once again favored to be at the top of 32-3A.
And new head coach Rocky James isn't changing that mindset one bit.
"Expectations are very high here," James said. "The kids want nothing less than to win another district title and go deep into the playoffs. The winning attitude is here."
There are plenty of reasons why the Bobcats aren't expected to skip a beat under James.
Offensively, Joseph Vela is one of the Valley's top quarterbacks, and perhaps most athletic.
Along with Vela, backs Jacob Martinez and Trevor David combined for over 1,700 yards (1,703) in 2007.
Rio Hondo's offensive line is also a strength, paced by center Manny Montemayor.
"This team is one of our most talented teams offensively," James said. "I think we're as talented as any team we've had."
When asked, La Feria head coach Elifonso Esquivel didn't hesitate to praise the Bobcats' program.
"They've got that winning tradition," he said. "And they've done a real good job with that program."
The young Rio Hondo defense will be paced by last year's first-team all-state pick Alonzo Garza at end, along with fellow end Joshua Perez.
Another key element is the quality of James' coaching staff.
On offense alone, three former 5A staffers, two of them former offensive coordinators, came in to assist James.
Longtime Harlingen assistant and former South coordinator Jesse Landeros is the Bobcats' offensive boss. Another former South coach, Dan Cortez, will handle the O-line.
In addition, Ron Leach, a longtime Harlingen assistant and former coordinator with the Cardinals, will coach running backs.
So with essentially a Class 5A staff on offense, James said the Bobcats are in good hands.
"All of them have been great," he said. "They've really taken the reins of the offense and taken that pressure of of me. I'm trying to learn as much as I can from him (Landeros). They do a great job on that offensive side. There's no doubt they've helped me."
That said, Rio Hondo will be tested early in the season.
After a Week Zero date with 4A dropdown Robstown, the Bobcats go back up to Cotton Picker Stadium to take on 3A powerhouse Cuero.
Then a Week Two home date with perennial playoff contender Ingleside awaits.
"When you play those good teams, it prepares you for district," James said. "It'll help us prepare. But I really believe in playing these good teams. They'll be good tests for us."

No. 5 Rio Hondo
Coach: Rocky James, first season Top Returners: The Bobcats bring back QB Joseph Vela, running backs Jacob Martinez and Trevor David on offense. First-team all-state pick Alonzo Garza and end Joshua Perez anchor the defense. Of Note: The Bobcats have advanced to the area round of the playoffs for the past three seasons and want to clear the second-round hurdle. Vela was named one the RGV Super 6 quarterbacks in a Valley-wide challenge this summer. James is the second straight DC to take over as head coach, following Gus Cavazos.
2008 Schedule Aug. 29 at Robstown 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5 vs. Cuero at Robstown, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 Ingleside, 7 p.m. Sept. 19 OPEN Sept. 26 Zapata, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Port Isabel, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 Progreso, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at Hidalgo, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 24 Raymondville, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31 Lyford, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at La Feria, 7:30 p.m.

Tarpons offer community a way to recover from Dolly Team continues to work toward season despite hardships By JOEL GOMEZ RGVSports.com PORT ISABEL — Hurricane Dolly has not slowed down the Port Isabel Tarpons in their quest for a District 32-3A title. The past few weeks have been long and harsh for the town of Port Isabel, as the town has been continually trying to recover from the effects of Hurricane Dolly, which blew right through the community. Yet the citizens of Port Isabel are starting to get excited because even though it has been a tough time repairing the local businesses and relocating from the many houses that suffered severe damage, there is something right around the corner: football season. Most towns across the Valley have a big place in their heart for their football teams, but it seems that Port Isabel’s heart IS the football team. “It’s everything to this town, during the games the entire town is here.” Center Raul Lopez said. The idea that this community revolves around the football team isn’t lost to head coach Monty Stumbaugh, who knew how much of an impact his team had since day one. “I remember my first year here I took my players to the elementary schools to read to the kids and sign autographs,” Stumbaugh said. “You know, to show them how much these kids think about this team. A lot of those little kids want to grow up to be Tarpons.” So it almost comes as no surprise that amidst all of the rebuilding, practices have carried on as usual. Well, almost as usual. The team is practicing on the baseball field because the football sods are unsuitable and the locker room is under repair, forcing the team to get dressed in a completely different building. Not to mention that the schools around town are damaged enough to cause the school district to delay the first day of classes by two weeks. When asked how it feels to be at practice after such a long summer, running back Diego Garcia was quick to answer. “It’s been a way to get away from everything,” Garcia said. Coach Stumbaugh knows it will be tough to replace some of the players he lost from last year, including Nolan Nuñez and David Alaniz, who accounted for over half of the Tarpons total yards on offense last year. Look for Garcia and DeMoss to take control over this offense, who despite lacking varsity experience, are ready to step into the spotlight. As for the rest of the team? Stumbaugh isn’t worried. He feels his team is better prepared at an earlier point than in previous years. “They had a tough summer. We implemented an offseason program, because it’s time for us to take another step and they responded well,” Stumbaugh said. Things won’t get any easier for the Tarpons, who finished second to Rio Hondo last year in District 32-3A. The district has been retooled to include Lyford, Raymondville and Zapata, which means six of the eight teams made the playoffs last year. “Personally I like the bigger districts, I didn’t like only four district games,” Stumbaugh said. “But it’s like I tell the kids, now you better come to play every Friday night, or you’ll be sitting at home come November.” As daunting as the odds are against the Tarpons, there are two areas Stumbaugh won’t have to worry about. One of them is Tarpon Stadium, which, miraculously, is still in great shape. The other thing is getting the team to unite as one, as a couple of his seniors seem to have already mastered this concept. After Hurricane Dolly, smashed through the town, tight end Derick Strank and his family welcomed Garcia, Lopez, and Right Guard Alex Betancourt into their home as their families tried to recover from the tragedy. When asked about how the situation was going, the boys all seemed to complete each other sentences as these past few weeks have pulled them closer together as friends. “It just goes to show what kind of community this is,” Stumbaugh reflected. “Everyone chipped in to help out, and that’s what it’s all about, and we are proud to be a part of it.”
