How many other 32-3A scrimmage results were posted. Anyone have the results of the rest of 32-3A after first week of scrimmage?
HARLINGEN HIGH 13, PORT ISABEL 0: At Harlingen, Harlingen scored three times against PI in the controlled scrimmage then beat PI again 13-0 in the game situation portion of the exhibition contest.
"We got a lot reps to a lot of our kids and we got them exhausted," Gomez said. "And that's what we wanted to do. But I'm really proud of their effort today. They showed a lot of want to. We're going to need a lot of that effort against McHi in Week 0."
Senior quarterback John Murphy executed the offense and threw TD passes to Angel Cantu and Luke Lucio.
Running back Pablo Garza scored another couple of times as the Cardinals' O racked up 427 total yards.
Port Isabel, meanwhile, couldn't generate any offense and had four turnovers.
RIO HONDO 2 LA VILLA 0: At Rio Hondo, the Bobcats looked sharp in a short scrimmage against La Villa.
Each team ran 20 plays with the first team and then 15 plays with backups.
Rio Hondo's Jacob Martinez notched a 35-yard touchdown run while quarterback Joseph Vela dove in from three yards out to round out the scoring.
"Things went real well," Rio Hondo head coach Rocky James said. "The scrimmage went pretty much our way."
The Bobcats' offense under new coordinator Jesse Landeros looked crisp with Vela at the controls, James said.
"Our offense looked real good," said James, who's in his first season as head coach. "Our receivers ran real good routes and everything was smooth."
Defensively, last year's all-stater Alonzo Garza along with end Joshua Perez stood out for Rio Hondo. Linebacker Jack Chavez was also solid.
"Jack stepped in beautifully," James said.
Rio Hondo will take on Valley View in their final scrimmage next week in Pharr.
PROGRESO 2, SANTA ROSA 0: At Santa Rosa, Progreso got two touchdowns from super back Juan Vega to stop the Warriors.
Vega scored first on an eight-yard run and followed it up with a 60-yard burst to lead an all-around solid outing for the Red Ants.
Each team ran series of 20 and 15 plays in a controlled format.
"Our kids played great," Progreso head coach Elvis Hernandez said. "We played well offensively and defensively."
New quarterback Juan Treviño settled in nicely, highlighted by a 40-yard pass to Roger Vasquez as the Red Ants will try to become a more balanced offense in ‘08.
"Our passing game looked good," Hernandez said. "But they (Santa Rosa) played a defense where we felt we could run on them."
Despite the loss, Santa Rosa head coach Joshua Gonzalez saw some things to build off of.
"There were some positives," Gonzalez said. "We've just gotta look at the tape and correct some things. We alternated a lot of players, including quarterback. There were some pluses. But overall, as a team, we've got a lot of work to do."
SANTA MARIA 5, LA FERIA JV 1: At La Feria, Santa Maria quarterback Andy De La Rosa had a hand in all five Cougar touchdowns to pace them to a solid day.
De La Rosa rushed for three touchdowns and tossed one each to Martin Rivas and Robert Ramos.
Not surprisingly, Santa Maria head coach Lupe Perez was pleased with the Cougars' efforts.
"We had a pretty good outing," he said. "So far, so good. We suited 17 kids on varsity, and the kids' work ethic is there. They never gave up and that's all I could ask for."
Each team ran 15 and 10-play drives in a controlled format.
The Cougars will face off with MMA next week.
RAYMONDVILLE 5, JUAREZ-LINCOLN 2: At La Joya, Raymondville played most of the scrimmage without starting quarterback Raul Salinas, but still beat Juarez-Lincoln in its first scrimmage of the season.
Raymondville coach Alex Leal said Salinas was injured on the first play of the day but should be ready for the team's season-opener Aug. 29 at Tuloso-Midway. In Salinas' place, Cippy Villarreal threw for 220 yards to pace the Raymondville offense.
"I was really pleased with our effort. (Villarreal) did a great job," Leal said.
As for the Huskies, who were competing against another school for the first time, Leal was impressed by coach Aaron Garcia and his team.
"They are a very scrappy bunch. They were very well coached and were very scrappy," Leal said. "They have a bunch of young kids so they're going to be OK, they're going to be real OK in the next year or so. Those guys are doing a great job of coaching over there."
