Diaz-Katsidis presser! July 10, 2008 "My titles have been taken hostage and it's my duty to gain them back," says former unified lightweight champion Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz, "this is the first step there!" It was standing room only for the local media who attended the press fight conference Wednesday at Dave and Busters in Houston where local favorites Diaz and Rocky Juarez will square off in separate bouts September 6th at the Toyota Center. The HBO-televised card headlines Diaz (33-1, 17 KOs) against Michael Katsidis (23-1, 20 KOs). The co-main event features2000 Olympic silver medalist Rocky Juarez (27-4, 19 KOs) who takes on former WBO super featherweight champion Jorge Barrios (47-3, 37 KOs) in a ten round bout. This will be Diaz' first fight in his hometown of Houston since 2005, when he won a TKO over Billy Irwin. He lost his IBF, WBA, and WBO lightweight titles in a split decision against Nate Campbell in March of this year. "HBO's Boxing After Dark series made its name on fights like Diaz-Katsidis," said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. "Marco Antonio Barrera-Kennedy McKinney and Arturo Gatti-Wilson Rodriguez were just two of the spectacular wars that aired on the series and I have no doubt that Diaz-Katsidis will join those classics in the hearts of fans around the world." Golden Boy COO David Itskowitch was on hand to introduce the main event fighters. Even with the fight almost two months away, both fighters Diaz and Katsidis looked to be in great shape at the press conference. Photo: Byron Spurlock "I'm glad to be a part of the Golden Boy team," said Diaz. "This is going to be a great fight because we are both warriors. We both come straight forward and we don't like to give into the other fighter. I know this is going to be great fight.....I can't wait to step foot back into the ring here in my hometown of Houston, the fans and media have shown me great support. It's sort of ironic that I come back to fight in Houston without my titles. I never got the chance to defend my titles here; but I'm hungry to win my titles back. I feel that they have been taken hostage from me." Photo: Byron Spurlock Katsidis stated, "We got into town last night. Texas is a nice place. I can't wait for the fight for we are ready. What we have here is two hungry fighters that both want to win and are ready.....It’s going to be an explosive fight all right, but I’m bringing the dynamite." Both co-main event fighters Juarez and Barrios are expected to bring a strong effort as both need a win on the big stage at Toyota Center in Houston and in front of a national TV audience. Photo: Byron Spurlock "I’m excited that this fight is finally going to happen and in my hometown," said Juarez. "I’ve been waiting for Barrios for a long time so I know he is a dangerous and experienced fighter, but I also know I’ll be prepared to stop him in front of all my Houston fans on September 6th." Barrios did not attend the press fight conference, opting not to break camp as he prepares for this upcoming fight. Photo: Byron Spurlock In preparation, both Diaz and Juarez have been working with world class trainer Ronnie Shields. "I too have to echo the sentiments that this will be a great fight," commented Shields. "With Rocky and Juan being on the same card here in Houston, this is going to be an electric night in Houston. If you are not a boxing fan, and if you have never been to a fight before, this is the fight that you should come and see." Also on the undercard are two top Houston prospects who were both national amateur champions: lightweight Hylon Williams (2-0) and welterweight Jermell Charlo (3-0). Tickets for Diaz vs. Katsidis and Juarez vs. Barrios, priced at $200, $100, $60, $40 and $25, go on sale today.

Soto-Lorenzo Update!
Thursday, July 10 2008
A vote by the WBC Board of Governors is currently too close to call as how to the WBC will handle the interim super featherweight bout between Humberto Soto and Francisco Lorenzo. Lorenzo won by controversial fourth round disqualification after being battered by Soto for most the fight, however the WBC refused to crown Lorenzo and put it up for a vote as to whether to recognize Soto as interim champion, or consider the bout a "no contest." There are 36 possible votes with some not yet received. In the event of a tie, WBC President Jose Sulaiman will cast the deciding vote.

Friday, July 11 2008
Promoter Bob Arum told reporters today that Manny Pacquiao and Humberto Soto will likely meet for the Pacman's WBC lightweight title on November 15 at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas. A proposed bout with unbeaten WBA 130lb champion Edwin Valero could be next should Pacquiao defeat Soto. Pacquiao-Soto isn't a done deal at the point, but Arum plans to meet with Pacquiao later this month to confirm the bout.

Rahman ready to rock Toney!
Friday, July 11 2008
Hasim Rahman, training in Phoenix, has sparred over 150 rounds while getting ready to tangle with James Toney on Wednesday, July 16 at the Pechanga Resort & Casino. "The Rock is training at a high level," said chief trainer Marshall Kauffman. "He's sparred 12 rounds in a single day a number of times. I like his work rate and I am convinced he will beat Toney next week." It's an important fight, titled 'Last Chance.' "We win, we move on to much bigger fights," Kauffman said. Rahman plans to be Los Angeles on Sunday eve to get ready for fight week activities. The scheduled 12-round NABO heavyweight title bout -- presented by Goossen Tutor Promotions and Don King Productions, in association with Top Rank – will headline an FSN "Best Damn Fight Night" telecast (11PM ET/8PM PT) from the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA.

Chavez gets by Vanda!
Saturday, July 12 2008
Son of the Legend Julio César Chavez Jr (37-0-1, 29 KOs) had all he could handle against Matt Vanda (36-7, 21 KOs) on Saturday night in Hermosillo, Mexico, taking a hard fought split decision in a jr middleweight bout. Junior was in command over the first half of the fight, but Vanda came on strong and it was an exciting toe-to-toe war over the last five rounds. Chavez was totally gassed near the end of the fight. Scores were 97-93 Chavez, 96-95 Vanda, and a preposterous 100-90 for Chavez. "I wanted to knock him out, but I couldn't," said Chavez after the fight. "I'm satisfied with the decision. What can I do?"
IBF jr flyweight champion Ulises "Archi" Solis (27-1-1, 21 KOs) pounded out a twelve round unanimous decision over Glen Donaire (19-4-1, 12 KOs). It was a competitive bout with both fighters suffering cuts. Solis pitched a shutout on the cards, winning 120-108, 120-108, 120-107.

Klitschko KOs Thompson!
Saturday, July 12 2008
IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (51-3, 45 KOs) scored an eleventh round KO over tough, awkward Tony "The Tiger" Thompson (31-2, 19 KOs) to defend his belts on Saturday night at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany. After a slow first round, Klitschko began to connect with his right hand in round two, a round in which both fighters were cut by a headbutt. Klitschko continued to headhunt while Thompson started having good results to the body in the fourth. By round seven, Klitschko seemed to be breaking down Thompson, who was once Wlad's sparring partner and seemed to be reverting to that mode as the fight went on. Thompson got up gingerly after both fighters got tangled up and went down to the canvas in the tenth. An animated Klitschko finally dropped Thompson for the count in the eleventh with a spectacular right hand. Time was 1:22. Next up for Klitschko will be a defense against Alexander Povetkin later this year.

there's a few fights he should've lost already from what i understand.........but a fight with a guy named julio cesar chavez is going to be a big draw.......meaning a lot of money. so they take care of him til that fight happens. then when he gets rocked by a real fighter, they drop him and move on.....
