Chavez-Vanda Notes!
Sunday, July 13 2008
The 100-90 score outraged knowledgeable Mexican boxing fans, who showered the ring with ice and beer to show their displeasure over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.'s split decision win over Matt Vanda. Even the great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. was booed when he tried to calm the crowd.
The outrageous 100-90 score was rendered by local judge Francisco Mouret. The other judges were Martin Canizalez (97-93 Chavez) and Rolando Tavares (96-95 Vanda). The scoring controversy marred what was actually an extremely entertaining and action-packed fight in which Chavez often wasn't getting the best of it in the late rounds. A rematch without the involvement of Mouret would be interesting.

Que paso RPM??
Chavez Jr. to retire?
Monday, July 14 2008
After Julio Cesar Chavez Jr's controversial split decision win over Matt Vanda on Saturday night, Junior dropped the bombshell that he's considering hanging up his gloves for good. "The people wanted me to score a knockout but I could not," Chavez Jr. told TV AZTECA. "The people are very, very discontented with the result (this as Julio Sr is being booed when trying to calm down the crowd) and what can I tell you? What can I tell you as a fighter? Everything is just very sad....because of the fight....I don't know what to do. I don't know what I will do. I need to think about it real hard. I am considering retirement."
Meanwhile, Julio Sr. lashed out at unruly fans who booed and threw things into the ring after the controversial decision was announced. "It's a group of drunks," said the Mexican legend. "I don't like excuses, but my son made a super human effort, he fought sick and wanted to cancel the fight. The doctor gave him a shot because he had a fever after the weigh-in," he said.

Hatton to KO trainer?
Monday, July 14 2008
IBO light welter titleholder Ricky Hatton may jettison long time trainer Billy Graham, according to the Manchester Evening News. Hatton's brother Matthew Hatton has recently left Graham and moved to another gym, and 'The Hitman' has been non-committal on who will train him for his November 22 fight with Paulie Malignaggi in Las Vegas. "I will sit down with Matthew and my dad and have a good chat about it," said Hatton. "I will take my time and make a decision, and should be in a position to say something on it in a week or so."

Toney-Rahman: Loser retires! July 14, 2008 One and done. At least that is something both James Toney and Hasim Rahman will agree to. The loser of their scheduled heavyweight bout on Wednesday night should no longer be considered a prizefighter and should retire. The winner will prolong his career in a vulnerable heavyweight division and attempt to challenge one of the title holders. Both fighters will face off at the Pechanga Resort and Casino on Wednesday night in Temecula, CA in a 12 round bout for the NABO heavyweight title. The bout will headline an appropriately-headlined "Last Chance" card, presented by Goossen Tutor Promotions, along with Top Rank and Don King Productions. The bout will be televised live on Fox Sports Net's "Best Damn Sports Show Period." The attention over the weekend on the boxing world was on the bright lights of Hamburg, Germany where IBF and WBO Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko stopped contender Tony Thompson in the 11th round. Now the focus will be at a resort and casino in the Southern California desert where two fighters hope to prolong their careers in a so-called weak division. For Toney, (70-6-3, 43 KOs) from Sherman Oaks, CA, it has been a long journey since making his professional debut almost 20 years ago and different weight classes. Although the fighter known as "Lights Out" is not the fighter he was a number of years ago, he has been known to surprise not just the media and boxing insiders, and mostly his opponents. After winning world titles at Middleweight and Super Middleweight, Toney lost back to back fights to Roy Jones and Montell Griffin, Toney positioned himself back into being a contender at 175 pounds. However, weight issues and disappointing defeats to Griffin again and Drake Thadzi in 1997 brought his career to a standstill. After ballooning to a then-high of 226 pounds, Toney hooked up with promoter Dan Goossen and won a world title for the third time when he impressively decisioned then-unbeaten Vassily Jirov in 2003. After making a successful transition to the Heavyweight ranks with a stoppage defeat over Evander Holyfield, Toney would win a minor belt Unfortunately for Toney, he lost two consecutive bouts at the hands of current WBC Heavyweight champion Samuel Peter. Rahman, (45-6-2, 36 KOs) from Baltimore, MD, may have less pedigree and accolades than Toney. However, he is a two-time world champion and has won his last four bouts in a row. After beginning his professional career unbeaten, Rahman suffered knockout defeats at the hands of David Tua and Oleg Maskaev, the latter where he was knocked out of the ring. After building up his record, Rahman pulled off a major upset by knocking out an unfocused Lennox Lewis in South Africa in 2001. His reign was short-lived as a motivated Lewis came into the rematch prepared, stopping Rahman in the fourth round. Rahman would go winless in his next three bouts after the Lewis rematch. However, he would win his next five bouts in a row to earn a shot at the vacant WBC title. He would win by unanimous decision over Monte Barrett in 2005. He would lose the belt to Oleg Maskaev in August of 2006, when he was stopped in the 12 round in an entertaining and close bout. Both Toney and Rahman are familiar with one another both inside and outside of the ring. Prior to Rahman defending the title a second time against Maskaev, Rahman defended the title against Toney in March of 2006. Both fighters had their moments in bout that ended in a 12 round majority decision draw.

WBC orders Soto-Lorenzo 2!
Monday, July 14 2008
Regarding the WBC interim super featherweight world championship fight between Humberto Soto and Francisco Lorenzo, the WBC Board of Governors has voted for: 1. The World Boxing Council officially confirms its decision of NO CONTEST, which was rendered at ringside on June 28. 2. Soto and Lorenzo must fight again, after the time that Lorenzo’s medical suspension by the Nevada Boxing Commission’s medical board has ended on December 26, 2008, with an updated thorough medical examination of Lorenzo, and the commission’s approval for him to fight. 3. Due to the length of Lorenzo’s medical suspension, Soto will be approved to fight for the title if that fight is before the end of October, which is about 60 days before the end of Lorenzo’s suspension. 4. Lorenzo is being fined $2,000 for his unsportsmanlike actions in the ring which were successful in influencing the referee’s decision. The $2,000 fine will be donated to a children’s hospital in the Dominican Republic, the home of Lorenzo, with the donation handled directly and personally by the Dominican Boxing Federation on behalf of the WBC. 5. The present double WBC world champion at lightweight and super featherweight, Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines, must announce by July 28 which title he has decided to keep. If he decides to relinquish the lightweight division title and keep the super featherweight title, Soto must fight Pacquiao for the WBC super featherweight world title, with Lorenzo fighting the winner.

Klitschko KOs Thompson! Saturday, July 12 2008 IBF/WBO/IBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (51-3, 45 KOs) scored an eleventh round KO over tough, awkward Tony "The Tiger" Thompson (31-2, 19 KOs) to defend his belts on Saturday night at the Color Line Arena in Hamburg, Germany. After a slow first round, Klitschko began to connect with his right hand in round two, a round in which both fighters were cut by a headbutt. Klitschko continued to headhunt while Thompson started having good results to the body in the fourth. By round seven, Klitschko seemed to be breaking down Thompson, who was once Wlad's sparring partner and seemed to be reverting to that mode as the fight went on. Thompson got up gingerly after both fighters got tangled up and went down to the canvas in the tenth. An animated Klitschko finally dropped Thompson for the count in the eleventh with a spectacular right hand. Time was 1:22. Next up for Klitschko will be a defense against Alexander Povetkin later this year. This was one boring fight IMO.

Barrera, Golden Boy split!
Monday, July 14 2008
After a successful five year relationship, Golden Boy Promotions and former world champion Marco Antonio Barrera have amicably agreed to end their association with each other with Barrera having been released from his promotional contract and agreeing to give up his position as a partner in Golden Boy Promotions. "Marco is ready to move in new direction with respect to his boxing career," said Golden Boy President Oscar de la Hoya. "We respect him and want to honor his decision to make a change. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to the prospects of working with him again in the future." Barrera stated, "While I have a great respect for Oscar de la Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions, I have decided that I wanted to take a new path with respect to my boxing career. I am pleased that we will move forward as friends."

Well there goes the only Mexican partner in Golden Boy Promotions.....im sure Barrera is planning on doing his own promotions, his fame is equal to Julio Cesar Chavez in Mexico...he will do good...
JC jr had a good fight, it was probably a draw, but i dont see how he could have lost that one, matt vanda has no power and JC was just walking though his punches....fans need to get that he isnt his dad, he cant knock out people in every fight yet, he is young, impatient and inexperienced, he will not retire, he has a great future in the sport...
The heavyweight fight was a sparring match, wlad is not going to get a real challange out of mandatories, his only real challenge would be sam peter, valuev would get decisioned (there is no one who can knock out that dude, he has a double insulated melon for a head)...and then there's who? no one...

James Toney: I’m the best damn heavyweight period!
July 16, 2008
When James “Lights Out” Toney and Hasim “The Rock” Rahman fought in 2006, the circumstances were much different. Rahman was the WBC titleholder, while Toney was viewed as a legit heavyweight contender, maybe the best heavyweight in the world. Although the fight ended in a majority draw, many felt that Toney did enough to merit the victory. Since that meeting, however, both fighters have been on a downslide. Toney has won just once in three fights, and that victory has been marred due to a positive steroid test. Rahman was knocked out in his next fight by Oleg Maskaev, and even though he’s won four straight, they’ve come against nondescript opposition.
On Wednesday night at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California and broadcast as part of Fox Sports Net’s “Best Damn Fight Night Period,” Toney (70-6-3, 43 KO’s) and Rahman (45-6-2, 36 KO’s) will meet in a fight appropriately titled “Last Chance” for the NABO heavyweight title.
Wednesday will be the first fight in over a year for Toney, who had to serve a year-long suspension after testing positive for steroids a second time. The layoff was not an easy one for the future Hall of Famer. “It was hard. I’m the type of person who likes to fight. I would fight once a month if I could,” Toney explained.
The time off also, however, allowed Toney to realize some things he hadn’t otherwise realized and get closer to those around him. “I bought my time and got closer with my family and my friends. And I found out who my real friends were and I found out who wasn’t. Everything happens for a reason, God makes everything happen for a reason, and it was a positive outcome for me. I’m ready to go ahead, restart my career, and be heavyweight champion of the world again before the end of the year,” stated Toney.
In order to get by Rahman and get a title shot, Toney knows what he has to do different from their initial meeting. “I’m in much better shape than I was the first time when I fought. Even though I was out of shape the first time, I still put hands on him. I’m ready to go I can’t wait. The hardest part right now just waiting to get there,” Toney said.
For the rematch with Rahman on Wednesday night, Toney will have a new trainer in his corner. “I got a great trainer right now who nobody’s ever heard of. People be sleeping on him, but after this fight he’s going to come out a little bit more. His name is Shadeed Saluki. He was the architect behind Lamon Brewster knocking out Wladimir Klitschko four years ago. We get along great and our chemistry is perfect. He’s been busting my behind every day and he’s not taking no shortcuts. This is the best camp I’ve had in a long time,” claimed Toney.
With the fight being on Fox Sports Net, Toney will get a chance to showcase his skills again on national television. Toney knows the importance of being able to showcase himself to the masses. “I love fighting in front of the media and on Fox because they have so many vehicles. I’m going to be seen whether it’s here in the United States, or overseas. It’s a great opportunity for me to get back in the spotlight. The Best Damn Sports Show Period, and I’m the best damn heavyweight period,” Toney said.
Wladimir Klitschko may be the best heavyweight in the world right now to most, but not according to Toney. “I don’t think much of (Wladimir) Klitschko. He’s first class garbage. Him and his brother, or sister (Vitali).”
Taking himself out of the equation, Toney feels the best heavyweight in the division is Samuel Peter. “Everybody thinks he’s the monster and all that, but I proved everybody wrong twice by not only taking his best shots, but beating him. I beat the brakes off of Sam Peter he first time in L.A and they (the judges) robbed me. The second time he put his track shoes on and ran the last two rounds. Everybody knows the best fighter in the world, and the best heavyweight in the world is me. The next time he sees me, he’s going to be knocked out on his butt I promise you,” Toney explained.
At 39 years of age Wednesday being his 80th fight as a professional, Toney’s time left as a boxer is limited. Toney, however, isn’t even thinking about that. “I can be competitive as long as my mind and my spirit is right. I’m not giving no time (for retirement). I want to be the heavyweight champ of the world again, which I will be. It’s just a matter of time. I want to get rid of the Klitschkos, Sam Peter, and whoever else. Then I’ll sit back and talk with my wife and my family, and we’ll go over every situation we have in front of us,” explained Toney.
Toney and Rahman may not be the first two heavyweights that come to mind when the division is talked about, but it’s likely that the two will put on a show Wednesday night during the “Best Damn Fight Night Period” because of where each stands in the division. Rahman is ranked in the top ten by a couple of the sanctioning organizations, and must win to keep those rankings, while Toney is looking to rejoin the top ten and get another crack at a world title.

Pacquiao to stay at 135!
Wednesday, July 16 2008
The WBC had given Manny Pacquiao until July 28th to decide whether to keep the WBC lightweight or WBC super featherweight title. The Pacman, however, has already made his choice, and not surprisingly will remain at lightweight. "I have already instructed my lawyer to inform the WBC that I will defend by 135-pound championship belt....so this means the 130-pound championship belt I won last March will be given up," Pacquiao told ABS-CBN News.

Calzaghe plans return to 168!
Wednesday, July 16 2008
WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has stated that his September 20 light heavyweight bout against Roy Jones Jr. will not be his last and that he plans to return to the super middleweight division following that fight. In a fax sent to WBO President Paco Valcarcel on British Boxing Board of Control letterhead dated July 16, 2008, and signed by Joe, the longtime 168lb champion wrote:
Dear Paco,
Further to our phone conversation of today's date I wish to remain as the WBO's Super Middleweight Champion. Following my proposed contest against Roy Jones Jnr. it is my intention to defend the WBO Super Middleweight Championship. I am proud to be a WBO Champion and thank you, as always, for the opportunities given to me in the past.
Kind regards, JOE CALZAGHE CBE

From what little i saw on youtube clips, it is my humble opinion that this two guys need to retire.....unfortunately these two have nothing else except boxing...
Toney still reminds me of the movie "the Great White Hope" "Im in perfect shape, im round".....and he has the nerve to say he came into this fight in shape....
Rahman has never impressed me....he's a tomato can, a one hit wonder, this dude aspires to be on journeyman status....
Toney would get KTFO by Wlad....Come to think about it, anybody with a good left jab and so-so right hand would give Toney a hard fight, Wlad has excellent power in both and he would KO James Toney....
And i hope Vitali knocks the snot out of Sam Peter....Lennox Lewis will never come back, Manny Stewart would never leave the Klitchkos corner at this point in time....saw what you want about stewart, but he can train tall-heavyweigth fighters very well, he just cant train anyone else halfway decent....:cough: andy lee :cough: jermain taylor :cough:

Toney speaks after win!
Thursday, July 17 2008
After his round stoppage victory over Hasim Rahman, James Toney had plenty to say about the fight and his future plans. "I was planning on stopping him (Rahman) before the seventh round," said Toney, who fought for the first time in 14 months. "I wanted to put him on his back. He kept looking for a way out because he did not expect for me to come in shape for this fight." Toney knew that he fought better in this fight than in the bout over two years ago against Rahman. "I was able to catch him better in this fight because I was landing sloppy right hands in the first fight. He was more cautious because he knew that I was in shape for this fight." Asked about his future plans, Toney stated, "I want to fight in Detroit in three weeks, but I know that (promoter) Dan (Goossen) won't let me." In regards to the Klitschko brothers, he responded in typical Toney fashion "Why do people think that they (Wladimir and Vitali) are great? I will beat (Wladimir) Klitschko! I will be 40 years old next month. I am back on my game."
