Holt Regains Title in One! Comes off Canvas to KO Torres in Rematch July 5, 2008 - Las Vegas, NV It is an American tradition for fireworks to explode on the fourth of July, but if you missed them, no worries. The real fireworks display in 2008 would occur the following night in front of the 3,226 fight fans that were in attendance at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas to witness the second meeting between Ricardo Torres and Kendal Holt, promoted by Top Rank, Inc. Ten months after a controversial ending to their previous encounter, Ricardo Torres was knocked out in spectacular fashion by Kendall Holt in the first minute of the first round of their rematch. Holt in the process regained the very title he lost to Torres in their previous encounter, the WBO super welterweight title. Mike Tyson used to have nights that ended like this on the regular. It was only appropriate that he be on hand for a fight that lasted only one minute and one second into the first round. A mere thirteen seconds into the first round would see Torres drop Holt with a looping right hand. He would be knocked down a second time seconds later as Torres was going in for the kill. But as the old boxing cliche goes: A hurt fighter is a dangerous fighter. Torres lunged forward looking to close the show but it would be Holt that would turn the lights out with a crushing overhand right that put Torres to sleep (literally) on one knee, awkwardly being held up by the ropes. Referee Jay Nady could have counted to one hundred, but it wouldn't have mattered as Torres showed no signs of movement as he remained terrifyingly still with his right arm draped over the middle rope. And just like that, Holt went from being cleaned out early to becoming the WBO super lightweight champion in dramatic fashion. The 27-year-old Holt improves his record to (24-2, 13 KOs) while Ricardo Torres received only his second professional defeat (32-2, 28 KOs) with the loss. More importantly, this fight may easily garner fight and/or round of the year honors. But this second fight wouldn't be without its own controversy. Although this fight was billed as "No Excuses," Ricardo Torres may have a viable excuse for what happened on this fateful evening. Replays showed that prior to the crushing right hand, an accidental head butt clearly hurt Torres and possibly set him up for the knockout. "I had him. He was in my hands. I got careless, he got me," Torres said after he regained consciousness. "There was some sort of head butt that took me off balance. I was off balance and I never saw that last punch." When the two clashed heads shortly after the second knockdown, it was clear that the butt affected Torres as he stumbled to the ropes right before the right hand finished him off. Regardless, there is nothing that can be taken away from the heart and determination of Holt. "Thank you for the opportunity. You didn't have to do this. I wouldn't have become world champion if this fight wasn't here tonight," Holt was heard saying to Torres from ringside when checking on the former champion. A third fight between the two is quite intriguing and considering the circumstances, it absolutely makes sense. But will Holt give to Torres what the Columbian gave to him or will Holt look towards the likes of Ricky Hatton and others?

Hatton won’t quit yet!
Tuesday, July 8 2008
British boxing hero Ricky Hatton has played down reports in the press that he only has two fights left in him. While Hatton admits he is entering ‘the home straight’ of his career, he has no intention of hanging up his gloves just yet. Speaking to Setanta Sports News, Hatton said, "Everybody wants to fight Ricky Hatton these days; with the fan base I’ve got, the following I’ve got and how exciting my fights are. I feel like I’m performing better than I’ve ever performed. I don’t want to turn round and say ‘one more fight, two more fights, three more fights.’ When you’re in a position like I am and you’re performing like I am, retirement doesn’t come into my thinking really."

WBC to give Soto title?
Tuesday, July 8 2008
The WBC Board of Governors will decide on Thursday whether or not to award super featherweight Humberto Soto with the interim 130lb title. Soto lost by disqualification to Francisco Lorenzo on June 28 in a highly controversial WBC interim super featherweight title bout in Las Vegas. The Mexico City-based sanctioning group has already refused to give Lorenzo the title and is still debating whether to recognize Soto as the interim titlist or leave the belt vacant. With Manny Pacquiao, who holds both the WBC 130lb and 135lb belts, virtually certain to give up the 130lb strap, as interim beltholder Soto would become the full WBC 130lb world champion despite the "official" loss to Lorenzo.
Pacquiao, meanwhile, has unbeaten WBA 130lb champion Edwin Valero in his sights. There is already talk of a November 8 showdown in Houston for Pacman's WBC lightweight belt.

Peter-Klitschko in Berlin?
Wednesday, July 9 2008
Looks like WBC heavyweight champion Sam Peter and champion emeritus Vitali Klitschko will meet on October 4th, probably at the new 17,000-seat O2 World Arena in Berlin. Vitali's last fight was nearly four years ago in December 2004. He will turn 37 later this month.

Lorenzo Camp lashes out!
July 9, 2008
The handlers of Jr. Lightweight contender Francisco Lorenzo, who was awarded a disqualification victory over Humberto Soto on the June 28 undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. David Diaz, are lashing out at Jose Sulaimán, the longtime president of the WBC.
“Mr. Sulaimán thinks he’s above the rules that govern boxing,” stated Jose Rosario, who co-manages Lorenzo along with partner Valentín Contreras. “The Nevada State Athletic Commission, which oversaw the fight, awarded Francisco the victory. Sulaimán thinks that because we have remained silent up to this point, we will let him do Francisco an injustice. He was the winner, plain and simple, according the rules of the State of Nevada, which state that if you hit your opponent while he is down, it is a clear foul. Soto threw two punches after Francisco took a knee, a right uppercut that missed and the left hook that hit him behind the head. He had plenty of time to refrain from hitting Francisco, but chose not to.”
During an interview while still in the ring, referee Joe Cortez told Top Rank analyst Wally Matthews that he warns fighters in the dressing room about possible infractions and their repercussions. “When you hit your opponent while he’s down it may cost you a point, or you may be disqualified,” he said.
Cortez, who has refereed hundreds of world title fights, “made a call based on what he saw happen in the ring,” according to Rosario. “For Sulaimán to try and overrule what the Nevada Commission considered a victory for Lorenzo, speaks volumes about his gigantic ego as well as his ability to govern. He was there to observe the bout (he was not the acting supervisor), not be the judge of the fight. Allowing him to act above the law sets a very dangerous precedent and we will not let it happen. A victory meant the Interim World Title for Francisco, but now Sulaimán is even considering giving Soto the crown. Is this ridiculous or what? I guess Sulaimán has long forgotten the Graciano Rocchigiani fiasco that forced his organization to file for Chapter 11 so that he wouldn’t have to pay Rocchigiani. This is the same man who claims that the WBC is head and shoulders above the other sanctioning bodies and who recently deemed the IBF Minimumweight title fight between Florante Condes and Raul Garcia, “a fight of lesser prestige.” These comments were made because the Mexican network Televisa had the nerve to air an IBF title fight instead of the WBC title fight between Edgar Sosa and Takashi Kunishige.
“Let it be known that we have obtained the services of Pat English and will not rest until the WBC does the right thing and acknowledges Lorenzo as the rightful winner of this bout, and gives him the belt he was entitled to receive after the official outcome.”

What ever happened to the boxer from Weslaco? I think his last name was Garcia, but I'm not too sure if that was his last name.
