Take 3 for E-E Super Bowl Weather has delayed the event twice, but it starts at 9 a.m. Wednesday July 15, 2008 By John Cannon | Mid-Valley Town Crier EDCOUCH - The Super Bowl is on.
Substantial downpours postponed the first Rio Grande Valley 7-on-7 Super Bowl tournament two weeks ago, but finally it will be played at 9 a.m. today.
Edcouch-Elsa coach Joe Solis said it has been hectic getting everything together since his team just returned from the state tournament in College Station.
"I was supposed to take a couple of weeks off in July, but it looks like I will not be able to," Solis said. "Since we have gotten back it has been wild getting things ready. We were not able to play the first time because of all the rain that we had. Then we rescheduled it for last Wednesday, but it rained real hard Monday night and we had six inches of water.
"But we are ready to go now, and the fields are in great condition. All the teams are ready to go, and it is going to be a very exciting tournament."
Mercedes, La Villa, and Weslaco High also will compete in the tournament. They joined Edcouch-Elsa as the Valley representatives in the state 7-on-7 tournament.
"All four teams went up to College Station, and the experience gained up there was unbelievable," Solis said. "I feel that all four of us could have gone further than we did, but things did not go our way. But these four teams could be the favorites coming into the tournament."
Solis feels these tournaments will help Valley teams, not only in 7-on-7 but in the regular season as well.
"Having tournaments like this only makes us stronger and gets our passing games up to par," Solis said. "Anyone will tell you that the one-back system is the top offense in Texas, and the teams that run it have had a lot of success in the playoffs.
"I am excited about seeing the talent that will be here today, as well as witnessing six of the best quarterbacks in the Valley airing it out. Bragging rights will definitely be on the line in this tournament, and the winner can call themselves the Super Bowl champs of the Valley."
Afternoon bracket play will begin at 2 p.m. and the championship is slated for 4 p.m. at Yellowjacket Stadium. Admission is $2 with all proceeds going to the Gridiron Heroes program, a program offering long-term resources and support to young men and their families who have been impacted by serious and life-threatening injuries.
