PHOTO: Michael Phelps of the U.S. swims in his men’s 200 meters butterfly heat at the National Aquatics Center during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games August 11, 2008. REUTERS/David GrayAugust 12th, 2008 Phelps three in three, joins Olympic elitePosted by: Kevin FylanThere was never any doubt about this one. Michael Phelps won the 200m freestyle, secured his third gold medal of these Games — his third world record, too — and become only the fifth athlete to win nine gold medals at the Summer Olympics. He joins fellow Americans Mark Spitz and Carl Lewis, Finnish athlete Paavo Nurmi and Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina at the top of the all-time list of gold medal winners. But the record he really has in his sights is Spitz’s haul of seven gold medals in Munich in 1972. Can anything now stop Phelps going on to win all all eight? He certainly looks to be swimming better than ever at the these Games, with today’s time of 1:42.96 shattering his own world record by 0.90 seconds. It was an astonishing performance. Can he manage five more? blogs.reuters.com/china/2008/08/12/phelps-three-in-three-joins-olympic-elite/

The only way I can see him from getting this record is by someone messing up in the relay....if that goes good he's got the record in the books!

Phelps is the best in history, but the greatest fear is how China lies to the world about he ages of those gymnasts, and we have to take their word for it because it says so on their passport. CHEATERS!!!

So the Chinese Women just won the gold over the U.S....
Our girls had a couple falls, and they had one, but even if everyone had hit perfectly, looks like the Chinese girls were going to get the gold.
Aside from the fact hat the experts had the Chinese routines scouted showing higher level difficulty on most events, having the home crowd advantage was another plus. Whether they admit it or not, the judges can't help but be influenced by the loud chants from the home crowd... Just as it seemed to help the U.S. women at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics...
The Chinese were better on this night, but the Olympics are not over.

According to their passports, yes.

I was a bit surprised about the reports on lying about age once I saw the gymnasts, but I guess that all started by articles printed in China saying some of their girls were only 14 and in the Olympics (trying to say wow, so young).
Most of their girls didn't look as young as some I've seen in the past. The one that had her hair done in a bun and was unbelievable on the bars, that's the one I thought might be too young, and maybe one of the other ones...
I know when Nadia (Romania) won the All Around at the 1976 Olympics she was only 14. The Russians got so mad a little girl beat theirs, they kept pushing for raising the age limit, so it went to 15, and more recently to 16--now supposedly it's to keep really young girls from getting injured in the sport...
But either way, it's true that they shouldn't be there if they're inelligible.

So how does the medal count look so far. And i saw phelps go 5 for 5, this guy is a beast. I mean that lead he built up for his team, pretty much set the bar for gold and the world record in the 800. It was ridiculous the kind of lead the U.S had on everyone else. No doubt hes the best in olympic history when it comes to the swimming events.

wanna know phelps secret?
kid eat like a starting basketball team!!
PHELPS' PIG SECRET:
Swimming sensation Michael Phelps has an Olympic recipe for success - and it involves eating a staggering 12,000 calories a day.
"Eat, sleep and swim. That's all I can do," Phelps, who won two more gold medals today, told NBC when asked what he needs to win medals. "Get some calories into my system and try to recover the best I can."
By comparison, the average man of the same age needs to ingest about 2,000 calories a day.
Phelps, 23, will swim 17 times over nine days of competition at the Beijing Games - meaning that he will need all the calories he can shovel in his mouth in order to keep his energy levels high.
Phelps' diet - which involves ingesting 4,000 calories every time he sits down for a meal - resembles that of a reckless overeater rather than an Olympian.
Phelps lends a new spin to the phrase "Breakfast of Champions" by starting off his day by eating three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise.
He follows that up with two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast topped with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes.
At lunch, Phelps gobbles up a pound of enriched pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches slathered with mayo on white bread - capping off the meal by chugging about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.
For dinner, Phelps really loads up on the carbs - what he needs to give him plenty of energy for his five-hours-a-day, six-days-a-week regimen - with a pound of pasta and an entire pizza.
He washes all that down with another 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.
Phelps remains on course to at least equal Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals won at the 1972 Munich Games.
At these Summer Games, a typical day for Phelps starts with a 5 a.m. wake-up call. Most of his races have taken place between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET when in China - 12 hours ahead of East Coast time.
