this may be a little late but what the heck....
I WAS WONDERING WHY PPL DO NOT HAVE BACK UP GENERATORS for thier homes.... when i lived in dallas it was very common for ppl to include a Diesel generators into the cost of a new house being built... one that would switch aoutomaticly when the power went out... it only cost about $6000 for one that would run the whole house(a/c UNITS,heater and fridge/freezer included) compared to the 200,000 that houses are going for... whats an extra 6000 really... chump change...
Right now i rent, while buying 10 acres... will be done pay the land soon and will consider building with in the next 5 yrs...
We've made a check list for our home its small and maybe you all could add some suggestions to better prpare us for anouther hurricane on natural disaster...
1. Deisle Generator( night use) 2. storm Shutters (hand cranked or electric) 3. Solar Panels...(day use)
trees with long tap roots and strong wood... are also an option...(ebony came to mind)... oak is a nice shade tree but i saw to many of them uprooted and snapped... its a hassle with the clean up...
any more suggestions for me and la wifa...

I think your going over the line with being picky about trees....they get uprooted if its there time regardless of what kind it is........as far as generators....its always good to have one around incase of emergency.......not sure id plug it in to the whole house though.....maybe just have it there ready for the major necesities when the lights go out.....
$6000 to back up your whole house is not bad though.....

we got one sunday morning from my neighbor who said, " f*** this, I'm out of here". He said "you can use our generator" so we used it on the ac in the LR. it helped out alot.

yea i thought it was picky with the trees but will see...
But yea getting a generator for the whole house is a option we will be making, and add into the loan... 6000 is for a high end quiet desiel generator... they also have propane and nat. gas, than run quietly for that price... yo can get a lower end generator that has a 200amp capacity (enough for a 3000sqft house) starting at $3500 bucks.....
I choose deisel cause they have the biggest bang for the buck... it runs longer three time as long as gasoline
we've always considered solar lights as an option but nowsee it as a nessesity.. not only will it keep a light bill to under $50 a month if that , but incase of another hurricane we have light during the day.. they start about $15000 - $20000 (including installation)... its a lot more to add on the loan, but they are tax deductable and pay for themselves with in a few years... I plan on saveing some money building the house cause my brother is a master Electrician and i have some experiance.. with his licence and my experance i will be saving about 15000 on the wiring of the house... (wiring a house is something serious and would not recomend it to anyone who does not have the knowledge), we have relitives who own A/c and plumming companies so it wont cost us market price for the service... (and i am not talking about handyman ppl..they are state licenced)...
so by saving $$ in these areas i plan to spen it in others such as the gernerator, shutters, and solar panels, ect....

I was thinking about something... if yo had a generator and had the doors and windows closed with your a/c tv, radio ect running in your house you would not hear the nieborghs generators running... i heard my neighbors generators but only caus ei had the windows open and doors, trying to get a bit of air through the house... who cares if it sounds loud... if you cant hear it while your nice and comfy in the a/c

Well just dont plant your trees on top of your septic tank. The roots of this tree knocked a hole in the top of my septic tank(poophole as my 5 yr old likes to call it). Then the insurance adjuster tells me that the hole was knocked in the septic tank because of flooding not the wind from the hurricane. I just laughed at him and said "do you see any flooding around here cause I dont." Effn idiot.

It was those chorizo and egg breakfast taco's from stripes. As Cheech would say "Come on Ice Cream"!

I'd fight the adjuster on that one. Their business is to save money for the company, not get you out of the hole. No pun intended.

I plan on it but he did say he was going to authorize me to re roof my entire house even though I only lost a few shingles so I have to tread lightly.

That sounds like it might be a good trade off. I'd get a septic guy out there anyway. It may not be such a good deal.
