My take has always been there are dumb #ss people everywhere. There are a million names people can be called or viewed by. You take your pick and I can give one of them a name. Lack of success anywhere isn't because you are anything. I don't care if you are racist, a bigot, or just plain prejudiced. By the way, there are huge differences.
That kid from Rio Hondo for the Bear's didn't appear to be held back by much. There are thousands of examples.
Is this when we start talking about Black athletes being better than Anglos and Mexicans now?
Come on folks! This is just excuse making. Life isn't fair, end of story.

Remember last year when that person brought up the case, in the old forum, that certain races were predisposed at excelling in certain sports because of their genetic makeup? How many pages was that?

i've had to experience things like this when i first moved to houston. i went out to a little league baseball game where the brother of a friend of mine was pitching. they were a team from south houston, mostly mexican/latino, against a team from katy. the majority of their players were white.....after about 3 innings, the coach from the katy team comes out and demands to see the pitchers birth certificate. his words were "how do i know how old he is? these people are liars. how can you believe anything those people say?" this was at an 11-12 yr old baseball game. my friend just grabbed his brother and we left. i had never felt so angry before in my life........it's a shame that it still goes on but you gotta rise above it all. i coached a lot of the players last year that are on the panthers varsity squad this year. one thing i tried to teach them is that you gotta rise above any kind of adversity that comes your way. you can't let it weigh you down you gotta fight through it. if you do that, win or lose, at the end of the day you'll be a better man for it....

Maybe valley teams need to start scheduling teams from up north. Then if we start beating them we might start getting a little respect. A little at a time is better than complaining and blaming the refs or that we are a valley team. This is one way to show those teams up north if we can compete with them. they have to come down to play us and we can't be blaming the refs. Traveling is going to be sacraficed.

I am here older than most in this forum. And I refrain to perpetuate racism. But the reality is it does exist in all walks of life. I have ignorantly thrown it, felt it against me and for me. In sports it is no different. I will put up a question. Even though it does exist and can play some effect yes even in sports think of back when Donna won state.
If you spoke Spanish whether you spoke English as well and were a US citizen you would not be served in restaurants in many parts of the state. I was there when this happened as a child. Both in the big cities and small towns in Texas and throughout other states. My point racism was at your face and made you feel you were or did not belong in the human race by others. And even in the papers the media was hyping the Mexicans coming up north to play. Some of that was even posted on the other forum by some members. I lived in that era as a child. Donna was not a Mexican school and yet this type of media news was perpetuating racism. Think of the odds Donna had to go through not to mention Pharr San Juan Alamo that were in the state finals two years in a row with very close games in that era.
Donna inspite of all that in a very hard time of "in your face racism" still won state.
And a very important point is what are you to do about it? I feel and have always felt that education is a big and most important factor in this issue as is in most others. And it starts with each and every one of us. We have to set the example in the face of adversity with such issues and work out with others and all public organizations and sports the fair choosing, and training of coaches, referees, etc. All of you especially young need to get more informed on how all the sport programs, organizations UIL or not go about choosing and training the members and people that carry out functions in sports and set their rules on it. And don't forget that some of us referring to Latinos since the valley is a big majority of it also perpetuate racism against Blacks and Whites and in some cases Mexicans. And as long as you keep doing this whether you mean it or in joke or jest it continues. Your discomfort with difference is indifference. And also remember that racism can also be on your side and that is still not good. This by no means says that I would not be helping a cause that is fighting for human rights. Because that is the very basis of why racisms exists. When others put down, demean, look down, and hate others for their differences, and therefore will not respect their human right priviledges that we all have as part of the human race. And finally when facing it instead of lashing back at it with all our excuses of the stimulus that sports like football brings out, set forth the example by not being the same. That is our ultimate test and why it starts with each and every one of us. Don't have trash when thrown at you become you, " rise above it, change the world.

I think this is always going to happen when you compete up in state. Things will never change. We just have to accept what is & try not to let anything get in our way. I know it's a difficult task to accomplish, though. Like they say "what goes around comes around". They'll eventually get what's coming to them in the end, someway or another.

Racism is an unfortunate occurance in life...no matter where you are. As long as there is a minority...there's bound to be racism.
I was born and raised in the valley and still live here...with stints in several other states in the midwest and northeast and I've experienced racism first hand on many, many occasions. I've seen a jamaican friend called..you know what..in missouri, and I've been subjected to racism from african-americans in the NE and by mexicans down here. it just happens.
The only thing athletes from down here can do is become better athletes.
Complaining about racist refs and coaches after a loss does nothing to benefit the teams. just makes everyone look like sore losers.

Yup, it is just a superiority complex. If we were an anglo team, they would probably be putting us down based on our income status.

All you can hope for is a fair shake. The kids from the Valley work just as hard as anyone up north.

you always have to protect and defend yourself.......i was born in Houston had many african amercian friends.....it was hard to mesh in at times but i stood my ground and defended myself when the time came to defend myself....when it was just words..id just laugh it off...1) because it wasnt worth it....2) cause it pissed them off more if i luaghed and at times it was enough for them to come at me so i can defend myself......lol

This is a hilarious topic to me. I've played against IGNORANT folks black, white, it didn't matter and had to work with all types of races. I learned to laugh at people like that because I felt sorry for them for not understanding that I was just as AMERICAN as they were. If they would make a comment about me being Hispanic or Mexican? "It ain't my fault your women love us!" "Obviously, we do it better!"
Seriously, My advice for our boys when they go up against teams from up north is they want to get to them mentally because they know our "valley" teams are getting better and "they" don't like it.
Tough cookies for them. Ha ha!

I wouldn't doubt the stuff that morris said was true, its been brought up before numerous times on here well on the old forum after one of our valley teams have gone up against a team from up north whether it was in soccer, football, baseball, etc ..
Its really unfortunate that our guys have to go through that, but like many on here have said you can't let the stuff get to you if anything it should serve as even more motivation. And i also agree with alaniz that those teams up there realize that we down here are getting better and better all around in sports and can't help but feel threatened. In soccer we have broke the barrier, and they have given us our respect because the b'ville schools have gone all the way and have won that state title. Still probably talk it up but they realize that we mean business.
Thats what we have to do in football, one of our teams have to break that barrier and then i think thats when they will shut up and give us the respect we deserve. But we have to realize we might have it tougher then some of those teams up there because there might be those biased refs who are looking to blow the whistle at any little thing. Its almost as if we have to play perfect, but in the end i think its gotten to the point where we just don't care who gets to state as long as one of our teams down here does. I know i feel that way.
Just gotta continue to work hard and keep trying to schedule teams that are consistenly in the playoffs and are usually roadblocks for us, and learn from those preseason games and when it comes down to postseason time we will be more prepared for the challenge. Anyway thats my opinion on the matter.

In Mexico they are racist against each other. For crying out loud! Light skin against dark skin and so on...w/e! And that is a good point and why I had to include some of us in the Valley. It is everywhere and it starts with each of us. If we perpetuate it there is no room to defend against it or complain about it. If we want to change it it starts with admitting where one is with it. To rise above it is how it starts changing. Think of all those people you will influence in a life time. You might think you don't, but we all do. I most certainly have been surprised by many relatives, friends, and young kids who I had no idea I was influencing. And not all was good. Example is stronger than words. No different than Action speaks louder than words.
