Just got back from my trip to College Station this weekend. I was able to catch many of the games played by our local teams (Mercedes, EE, Weslaco, and La Villa). I'm so proud to state that our boys represented our Valley very well. They played hard and went all out. Having said that, it's unfortunate that RACISM is still prevalent all across our great state. I've been a big fan of 7 on 7 football because I believe it lends a hand in the preparation of a football team for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, it would take a small miracle from God for one of our teams from the Valley to be able to win a state championship because of the racism that the officials, players, and coaches from up north exhibit. Case in point: Mercedes game - against Schertz Clemens, you had the coaching staff from Clemens making remarks to the MERCEDES players about their ability to play. Coach Mike Uribe had to finally stand up and get in a shouting match with the opposing coach just to have him shut his mouth. On the field, time after time, every call would go against Mercedes. EE game - against Stephenville, the winning touchdown for Stephenville was well out of bounds (at least 2 yards) but was called inbounds. Again, time after time, the calls went against EE. Weslaco game - against Spring, a coach from Spring kept yelling at his players to get it going because they were "losing to a team from the Valley with a bunch of Mexicans on it". After scoring 28 points in the first half, Weslaco was shut out in the second half with repeated 4 second violations. Again, done in by the refs. I can go on and on about the bias that these refs and coaches exhibit but I think you guys get the picture. I do think that there is something to learn from competing in this tourney but realistically to try and win this thing is nearly impossible because of the many barriers you must get through. Mexicans from the Valley are not going to beat an all White team from up north WHEN IT COUNTS. Edcouch Elsa has been superb all year long and even went 3-0 in their pool but on Saturday (when it counted) the refs ultimately did them in. Teams in the future should really consider if the monetary costs that go into traveling to College Station is worth it. It was frustrating watching this being done to our kids from the Valley. I stood next to a man that runs a recruiting site and he stated to me that we didn't stand a chance because we were from the Valley. He said "they won't let you win here". Congrats to all that competed and hopefully this will serve as a lesson in life to all the kids that were affected. Keep working hard this summer and keep this in your mind and heart as you are working in the weight room and doing your running. To beat those guys, you are going to have to be PERFECT. Work towards perfection and don't settle for anything less. We will take down the coastal bend this year and one of our 5a's will take down a San Antonio team. This should be our goals!!

I wish there was prove....its the same ole story over and over again when we play teams from up north. You would think at least one time, sombody would take a camera to record everything, i am starting to doubt the validity of these claims.

I think what he meant was documented proof. Something on camera, audio recording.... things of that nature that can expose these injustices. Otherwise, it's almost like it didn't happen.

The question is, what are YOU going to do about it?

Are you talking about just this particular incident or alleged racism as a whole? Your post seems as if you don't believe racism exists and chalk it up to 'rumors'. Please clarify.

Exactly, could of happened....could of not. Saying so every time we play a team from the north for the last 20+ years isn't proof.

Like you said, Racism is alive and kicking....I am starting to wonder if all the people that claim these things are overreact to incidents that do not go the way they expected them to go. I'm not saying they do not happen at all because they do, but I really doubt they happen the majority of the time we lose.

When you're there, it's painfully obvious.
It's an observation.

Hate to say it but this just sounds like another rant against refs only this time it's racism versus a preference for one team or another like we hear from half the team fans after every game down here.
"we were from the Valley. He said "they won't let you win here" That sounds more like a complaint against homer refs than racism.
Just an observation.

Fortunately, many of us don't experience this "garbage" until we leave the Valley. Unfortunately, those who do leave, such as our youths who go one to college beyond or area, often bear the brunt of such acts of stupidity. As an educator, I've been witness to dejected students who often return from "higher institutions of learning" from up north because they felt out of place due to their ethnic makeup or because someone called them a derogatory slur based on their race. My usual response is, "Suck it up, that's life." I also tell them, "Go back and finish what you started. Don't let ignorant people run or ruin your life. Seize the day!" I know that my thoughts seem naive, but it has been my experience that the only way one wins in life is to stand up to those who who have wronged you and prove them wrong. If you don't stand up or just ignore the problem, well then, you are what they say you are.

That Sucks, of Course to get respect you gotta prove that you deserve respect that's how it is in Football. Someone here in the Valley needs to win State and forget these Local Rivalries they need to be Regional. Coaches need to start looking up north and not next door. Its not Donna or Weslaco to beat its Donna and Southlake carroll or Weslaco and Midland something like that. I happend to know a couple of people here in Lewisville and they are in the Thick of Foot in North Texas I happend to see one of there practices and they use Cities like San Antonio, Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley as a prime example of why they should be at the top of there game and not end up like them. I Took great offence to what he said that I left.
