Will donna even bother fielding a basketball team bugman? No wonder during basketball season you go and support the edinburg bobcats, LOL. And beast weslaco brings basically everyone back, all key players are back and they are hungry.

You all don't feed them or what's the reason they are so hungry JK! Weslaco IMO will be the team to beat this year in 32-5A. Hanna, LF, and Pace have good chances of taking them out this year. 32-5A will be fun to watch this year.

I will always be a Redskin when it comes to football. Basketball season comes around and I become a part of the Edinburg Running Bobcats (literally). Those in the know, know what I am talking about. Bottom line, everyone knows where my loyalties lie.....

EDINBURG - The team name for McAllen High’s entry in the summer league this year? Kings. And, yeah, that seems about right.
Though they have yet to clinch the title of the Edinburg league, the Bulldogs – everyone’s favorite No. 1 this season and potentially a factor in the state rankings down the road – are resting comfortably near the summit, awaiting one more advance. After swamping a proud Edinburg team 67-49 Thursday in a truly one-sided blowout, there is no question about it. This is a special unit. No wonder Roy Swift has seemed so darned happy lately!
McHigh moved into the finals by dominating an EHS team that had advanced to the semis after besting Sharyland by 9 earlier in the night. The Bobcats were simply bum-rushed from the beginning by the Purple People Eaters.
Before anyone else suggests that J.J. Avila is the best ballplayer in the Valley, and they will and probably should be so inclined to opine thus about the 6-foot-5 junior, let it be stated for the record that, as they say on TV, there’s much more!
For instance, have you seen Cory Pace play? He’s a beast, with long arms and legs, and at 6-1, he attacks the rim with vengeance and a purpose. He whipped through the ‘Cats for 22 points, and soared above them for 14 rebounds, in a splendid night’s work. Pace and his gang waste no time getting up and down the court. Avila (13 points, 11 rebounds) owns the defensive boards with equal parts finesse and power, and his outlets are Waltonesque, leading to numbers at the other end and some ridiculously easy finishes. He didn’t look to score much Thursday, because he didn’t have to. One-man team, this ain’t.
This team has crazy size, especially for Border Ball, including junior Ryan Evans, who is 6-3 and lanky; he can board, block shots, and sprint, as all this juggernaut is lacking is seniors. But after having a great campaign in 2007, the guys have experience where it counts, upstate, and the next few years will be downright giddy for Swift and his squad.
That’s the long of it, as the Bulldogs throw three quality big men at you, all of whom can go 94 feet without a hitch. But the unsung guy who really makes this group hard to touch is a smooth little point guard named Nevin Franks.
He’s about 5-9, or tiny compared to his mates, but Franks can flat out play, with a brilliant handle, an easy way of controlling the tempo, and a super first step to the dish. Oh, and he also can pull up for soft, feathery jumpers. Franks had 15 points against Edinburg, with some nasty drives ending with elevation and twisting body control in traffic; on any other team, he’d be the top option, and that’s how dominant McHigh is and will be for the near future.
It’s rare to see EHS get routed on its home court, but Thursday the ‘Cats were done from the opening tap. McHigh junior Hutton Edwards, also no slouch but almost an afterthought as he’s surrounded by so much skill, popped in a trey and so did Franks for a lightning-fast 6-0 lead. Pace sliced into the lane for a deuce and then Evans added a free throw; 9-0, and the rest was gravy.
McHigh led by 20 at the half, pushing the ball on every possession and intimidating the smaller EHS group into bad, rushed shots. Jaime Acuna, who’d had a whale of a game against Sharyland, was game for the challenge, along with fellow senior Chris Flores (he and Acuna each had 15 to lead the ‘Cats). But there was just too much tall and too much speed and force for the homers to compete, and the rest of the game was a walkthrough.
There’s no reason to believe Edinburg won’t be in the running for a fourth straight District 31-5A title, despite the loss of tons of talent from its school-record 32-win group of a year ago, which advanced to the Sweet 16 along with McHigh. But matched against one of the strongest teams in recent Valley memory, it was a serious no-contest.
The title game of the summer league will happen tomorrow night at EHS, at 7:30. Whichever team advances out of the other half of the bracket, well, good luck, because the Bulldogs are looking unbeatable, plain and simple.
