1.) New head coach is not new -
Rocky James is the heart of the defense. It is his defense. Cavazos was a defensive minded coach, and hired a brilliant defensive coordinator. All the defensive staff is remaining in place. The coordinator is now Victor Sauceda (who was the WR coach). He graduated in the early 90's. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest QB's out of RH (followed by Greg Pena and Andy Alvarez). Unfortunately, he did not have a supporting cast. What better person to run the defense than someone who knows offense like the back of his hand, and knows what is needed to stop it. If you still doubt, I can assure you that Rocky will still have a major hand in the defense.
2.) New Offensive Coordinator -
The new coaches are from Harlingen South. Both of them are responsible for South's offense last year. South's problem was a lack of defense. If it weren't for that, they would have made it deeper in the playoffs. Then you have Joseph Vela's older brother (Greg Pena) as the QB coach . . . Greg taught Joseph everything. They are also cousins of (QB)Aaron Garza, who was also taught by Greg.
3.) Defensive Personnel -
All of the starters this year played ALOT last year. The D-Line are all returning starters. Also returning are two linebackers and one safety. All that is being replaced are two corners, a safety, and a linebacker. The replacements had extensive playing time last year, and they performed just as good as the starters. RH had a bench last year, and they will this year as well.
4.) New Offense -
Rio Hondo is sticking to the spread, but raising the pass to rush ratio (should be about 60%rush/40%pass this year as opposed to 70%rush/30%pass last year. You will still have have the big three (Vela, Martinez, David) in the backfield . . . with the exception of Martinez being used as a Z receiver on plays that need him there. The players know the scheme already. Nothing is changing, except the addition of more plays, and merging over to a more true spread offense.
5.) Past Performance (i.e. vs Palacios)
It was a bad showing. No one expected that. The players were having issues with each other that started about a day before the PI game. It culminated in the travesty of that playoff disaster. It was all internal politics (which has since graduated )
6.) Players vs New Coaches -
The kids warmed up to the new offensive staff very nicely. They got who they wanted and TRUSTED as a leader (Head Coach/AD). They respond well to Rocky and the other coaches.

I work at the school. I talked to the kids everyday. I know how they are. I know their intricacies, their hates, likes, personal problems, etc. Things were not hunky-dory with Cavazos/Marroquin. Many had issues of him . . . but that goes back to the internal politics. None of these are felt toward James or any of the other coaches. The kids are hungry. They are pushing for a deep playoff run this year. PI is but a stepping stone this year. Not a goal. Just a stepping stone . . . as is the rest of the district.
My boys will be on top of the district.
There you ahve it. Thanks for reading.
