I would have to say WO. Unless and that is a big unless the Tarpons get their new look together this week. Looks like a lot of adjusting and game plan polish is needed. Defense needs it to a high degree as well. WO has some speed and many seniors on the lineup that are return people. Some size on the line as well. If the Tarpons can put some of the pieces to the puzzle together they will have a good game on their hands. Just seems characteristic of many mistakes of previous years. Bad snaps, fumbles, poor tackling, some confusion on plays and defense. So lets hope this is taken care of. But as a Fan. I will go for the Tarpons of course. Again the discipline of focus is very important. It takes care of alot of bad execution, builds confidence, and it can make the difference.
LETS GO TARPONS GET IT DONE.

Whoo! good to be back up posting ;D So whos going to make it to the game? What about you Guy? I can't wait to finally go see the Tarpons play, it's been way too long of an offseason. So how have the Tarpons faired in the schrimmages? I missed both, the first one due to work and yesterdays due to the fact that I'm in San Antonio helping my girlfriend move into her dorm. I heard Diego was hurt, how is he doing?

Diego should be able to play against CC W-O. That will give PI a needed boost.
Things that need to be fixed/improved if PI is to have a chance at winning the next game:
1. Eliminate the trouble with the center-qb exchange. 2. Improve passing, both in better passing accuracy and WRs not dropping the balls. 3. Kyle needs to have the confidence and stay calm and collected; that would help 1 & 2. 4. Stay Healthly, PIs featured back has missed both scrimmages and FB Alaniz needs to be healthy too. 5. Protect the ball; they've been averaging 3-5 fumbles/scrimmage. 6. Put the team first and not be quilty of Personal Fouls. 7. Defense is quick and swarms, but they MUST make the tackle with the first hit- way too many mistackles. 8. Punting has been fine in the scrimmages, Kicking needs to improve from last year. 9. Secondary is giving WR too much space. 10. Though not being able to work on it during the scrimmages, Return of punts a must, plenty of times return man was hesitant to get the ball last year, costing PI at least 10yds.

CC West Oso didnt look great also in thier first scrimmage, but its a scrimmage and i am almost certain both teams will be ready for the first real game. Sometimes with coaches on the field some players just react different when they getting a ear full on the field.

I'd really like to put up a prediction, but i have yet to see the Tarpons with my own eyes and i haven't heard much on WO. I just hope the Tarpons can put up some points and get the offense and defense working in sync.

CC West Oso didnt look great also in thier first scrimmage, but its a scrimmage and i am almost certain both teams will be ready for the first real game. Sometimes with coaches on the field some players just react different when they getting a ear full on the field. The scrimmage can be deceptive to a real game. What has unfolded (to me) in PIs both scrimmage is the speed factor is not quite there. However we have shown to swarm the ball as it can be seen on the Harlingen video, and move the ball with Joe Vega being the spot light there. Both QBs show they can play as well. That is good in the QB since it answered my question of who would be the backup if one got injured. Controversy, i don't think that would happen with Stumbaugh. With fans that is another story. This game I feel will be a good game in that it is in PI. Very important is polish and focus since that will reduce the mental errors. This will be key in the West Oso game. My question is do you see West Oso having the same slow start as PI?

West Oso----- 27 Port Isabel --- 22 Do you think West Oso needs work on thier defense or do you see PI being able to move the ball well on West Oso? I feel if Diego is ready ( and keep in mind he doesn't have much contact practice this year) this will also be a key factor with PI. Is this on what you are going on as far as the score you predict?

PORT ISABEL -- As common as are the annual Spring Breaker's trek past Port Isabel High School onto South Padre Island, so are trips to the postseason for the Tarpons. Since 1974 the Tarpons have made the playoffs 28 times, more than any other Rio Grande Valley team during a 33-year span. The team by the sea has an undeniably rich history, unrivaled by most schools in the Valley from the beginning of its famed Seawall Defense in the 1970s to Marky Villarreal's record-breaking 403 rushing yards against Raymondville last season. The Tarpons are a perennial Class 3A power in the Valley and have been since moving to the class in 1980. They have won 37 playoff games -- far more than any other team in deep South Texas. The only two Valley schools to have gone further in the playoffs have been Donna and PSJA High, each state championship-game qualifiers. Port Isabel has reached the state semifinals three times (1981, 1994, 2003). From 1977 to 1983, Port Isabel won a staggering Valley-record 46 consecutive district games. Tarpons coach Monty Stumbaugh said that each year's Tarpons teams don't want to be the squad that does not make the playoffs.
"(The players) wear shirts that say, 'Protect the Tradition,'" Stumbaugh said. "It is a good deal for schools to have a good tradition. Basically our kids want to go out there and protect the tradition, if you know what I mean. That's their deal here. They don't want to let it down."
Tony Villarreal, who coached PI from 1990 to '96 and is now the coach at Weslaco, said football players are being coached 24/7 in the coastal community. "The thing about it there is that when the kids go home someone will get a hold of them," Tony Villarreal said. "They all have had fathers, older brothers, cousins or uncles who have played before them. It is almost like everyone has had a male in the household who has played Tarpon football." Although arguably the most successful Valley program since the mid-70s, success didn't always come so easily to Port Isabel during the program's early days. The Tarpons made the playoffs only once during their first 24 years of existence. IN THE BEGINNING 1950-1969 Port Isabel High dates to 1928, but the school did not have a football program until 1950 when PI competed as an independent and finished its inaugural season 2-6-1. The Tarpons began play in District 36-B the next season and finished 2-8.
PI won its first district title in 1952 despite a 4-6-1 record. The Tarpons tied Los Fresnos in a district contest, but won on penetrations 12-6 to give them their first playoff berth. West Oso sent PI packing in bi-district after a 58-0 romp. That was the Tarpons' only taste of the postseason until 1974. Port Isabel was average at best from 1952 to 1973, managing four winning seasons and not winning more than seven games in a season during its first...

I don't think we are counting out the Tarpons. I feel the Tarpons will do good in district and beyond. It is realistically looking at where they are now in reference to what the scrimmages have showed even though those were two tough scrimmages with some good teams on a higher classification. Most certainly there is room for improvement, a lot, which as it might seem not a commpliment it is. And this is what I mean. The work needed which is mostly polish and putting the team toghether reflects a good team that still needs a lot of work to get better. If they were not making alot of the errors that were evident on the scrimmages that in many cases would have made a big difference, and you have a team that doesn't need much improvement then you would worry. PI has some talent on this team that might take some time to put it together and get better. I will say this. If PI wins this next game inspite of being still rusty I would say they have a real good team with much improvement still to be made. That would be a big plus. But they are playing a fast team. So far PI has not shown good defense against fast teams ( and mind you I know those were scrimmages) The word is that West Oso is also struggling in their scrimmages as Sinton Pirates08 has mentioned so maybe both teams are in the same boat. Our advantages in the previous two scrimmages are that we played some better and or better prepared teams at this phase of the season. PI has yet to show that. Lets hope they put their act together by this week just enough to get the PI Tarpons going on a good start. I will say this I have a lot of confidence with this team and onto the next year. Lets just hope we can get the team going early since the district play is not too far ahead. And emphasize one game at a time.
