well i dont know if both will be ahead of Trevino but definatly feel that either one will.. mendez has proved it already and done it in big games.. trevino is good ive seen him but a feature back of the valley he is not.. not ahead of Mendez anyway and dont think he might be the best in the valley either.. like i said LF has a upcoming player that may play up to mendez and share snaps with the first O.. wither way one of the two wll definatley out preform Trevino I see you are back to your outlandish comments of demaeaning other teams.... We shall see in a few weeks how good your backs are and how good our backs are... I will say this right now We have the best combination of backs in Alex & Izzy of anyone in the Valley on paper... It is up to them to prove on the field but they will be given the opportunity to do it....

It's funny how he's (buzzy) still talking about Mercedes instead of worrying about Calallen. LMFAO!!!

Trevino, Tigers start at No. 7 Comments 0 | Recommend 0 August 21, 2008 - 4:27PM Brian Sandalow RGVSports.com MERCEDES - There's no question that Mercedes coach Gilbert Leal is happy to have Alex Trevino. Trevino, who rushed for 1,026 yards and 16 touchdowns last season, will be the focal point not only of the Tigers' offense, but also every defense Mercedes faces this season.
But the Tigers, who are tied for No. 7 team with Weslaco High in Valley Freedom Newspapers' preseason poll, are more than just Trevino.
"Alex is an ultimate competitor. He is probably a big part of why we are ranked No. 7. But at the same time we have seven returners back on offense from last year," Leal said. "He's going to share the load as far as the pressure of carrying the team but there are others returning also."
Trevino alone wouldn't be worth a top 10 ranking. Joining Trevino in returning from the team that finished second in District 32-4A last season and lost to Corpus Christi Calallen in the playoffs are six other offensive starters.
QB Albert Chavez (851 passing yards, 6 TDs) and running back Israel Vela (734 yards, 2 TDs) will join Trevino in the backfield. Chavez will also have an experienced group of receivers to throw to, with senior receivers Jorge Gonzalez (12 catches, 122 yards) and Jacob Noriaga (12 catchers, 119 yards, 1 TD) coming back for another season.
Defensively, the Tigers don't have quite as much experience as they do at the skill positions. Leal only has four starters coming back, with linebackers Jorge and Jose Salas, defensive end Jesus Martinez and junior defensive back Wally Martinez expected to start.
Those returning starters will have to build on the Tigers' second consecutive playoff season. And Leal can sense there is a different amount of confidence around his team in 2008, partly because of the success last season.
"I think the mood is excited. We feel pressure like we always do around here," Leal said. "The expectations are very high but at the same time I think we're pretty grounded as far as working every day and trying to improve every day. We're looking forward to playing each of our opponents one week at a time."

2008 Mercedes Tigers at a glance
Coach: Gilbert Leal , fourth year
Top Returners: Senior Alex Trevino is one of the most dangerous players in the Rio Grande Valley. He rushed for 1,026 yards and 16 scores and also caught 11 passes for 287 yards and four more TDs. Trevino is joined by six offensive returners from last season's team, including running back Israel Vela and QB Albert Chavez.
Of Note: Prior to 2006, Mercedes hadn't reached the postseason since 1999. The Tigers have had their season ended in both 2006 and 2007 by 4A power Corpus Christi Calhoun. Leal has created a difficult non-district schedule to prepare his team, with games against Port Lavaca Calhoun and Los Fresnos..
2008 Schedule
Aug. 30 Port Lavaca Calhoun at the Alamodome 7:30 p.m.
Sept. 5 at La Feria 7:30 p.m.
Sept. 12 vs. Los Fresnos 7:30 p.m.
Sept. 26 vs. Mission 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 4 at Mission Veterans 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 10 vs. Edcouch-Elsa 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 17 at Roma 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 24 vs. Weslaco East 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 31 at Valley View 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 7 vs. La Joya Lincoln-Juarez 7:30 p.m.

They are far from outlandish... like i said ive seen him play.... outlandish would be that trevino wont gain 50+yrds that game... are you saying that Trevino is overhelmingly better than Mendez in order for it to be OUTLANDISH... even saying Trevino is better than Mendez without beoing overwhelming is a big pill to swollow.. MY O... i dont think Trvino is better tham Mendez, but dont take my word for it.. ask WES, who has had us as a common opponent to be the judge of that... and if they come in hear and begin agreeing with me dont use the excuse of the midvalley rivalry cause they dont like LF anybetter,...
