East vs Psja Memorial
East looked really good, on both sides of the ball. Anyone else attend this scrimmage.

San Benito dominates Harlingen South in preseason scrimmage
By ARMANDO GARZA
RGVSports.com SAN BENITO - The San Benito Greyhounds looked rarin' to start the 2008 season.
Harlingen South, however, is still getting there.
The two squads engaged in the season's first scrimmage Saturday morning at Bobby Morrow Stadium and the home team was impressive to the tune of seven touchdowns to zero.
San Benito's defense was absolutely tenacious, pitching the shutout and not allowing South to cross midfield all day while the offense got going midway to cap the performance.
"I liked what I saw," San Benito head coach Mario Peña said. "I was pleased with what I saw defensively and then offensively. But we're not going to get a fat head over a scrimmage. What we're doing is evaluating players."
The teams played a controlled scrimmage that featured 20- and 15-play drives for each. They followed that with three 12-minute quarters of live action.
In the controlled scrimmage, new San Benito offensive coordinator Israel Gracia's offense got going after a slow start. And that's when Brandon Marquez got hot.
The 'Hounds' new signal-caller fired a TD to Kenny Corkhill and later a 70-yard strike down the left sideline to Ivan Castilleja.
Later in the first quarter of live action, Marquez connected with J.C. Guzman for a nice 61-yard pitch-and-catch score. Then Marquez scampered 49 yards to the Hawk 11, where he fired an 11-yard strike to Matthew Montalvo. Marquez later posted a nifty run of 38 yards.
"He started off slow," Peña said of Marquez. "But then he played a lot better for us."
Meanwhile, South appeared to be a work in progress.
Second-year coach Alan Cherry's club had major difficulties moving the ball against the San Benito D.
The Hawks graduated a slew of starters from last year's 11-1 squad and are in rebuilding mode.
Early on, the Green Birds' defense slowed San Benito and forced two turnovers.
But the offense couldn't convert them into points, as the 'Hounds, led by returning all-state defensive end Arturo Lopez and company, stifled them almost every time, including a safety.
Also shining for San Benito on Saturday were Jacob Barron, Edgar Perez and linebacker Pete Banda.
"Our experience on defense showed today," Peña said. "We've got good speed in our secondary, but we're inexperienced. But all in all, I was pleased."

EDINBURG HIGH 3, BROWNSVILLE RIVERA 1: At Edinburg, the Bobcats built a 3-0 lead on the strength of two long touchdown passes and a short scoring run.
"We have a lot of new guys but they stepped up and they're doing a real good job," Edinburg coach Joey Caceres said. "The best part about the whole thing is we still have a lot of room for improvement."
Wide receiver Steve Treviño caught what Caceres estimated was a 60-yard TD pass from Isaac Escobar and running back Michael Gonzalez cashed in on a screen pass from about the same distance. Edinburg's other score came on a 5-yard run by Rolie Palacios.
"It's a good start, but one thing that I did tell the kids, we ecxecuted well and we did some great things but we have a lot of room for improvement, and that's a positive," Caceres said. "The disappointing part was the last scoring drive they had. But it was a confidence booster."
RIO HONDO 2 LA VILLA 0: At Rio Hondo, the Bobcats looked sharp in a short scrimmage against La Villa.
Each team ran 20 plays with the first team and then 15 plays with backups.
Rio Hondo's Jacob Martinez notched a 35-yard touchdown run while quarterback Joseph Vela dove in from three yards out to round out the scoring. "Things went real well," Rio Hondo head coach Rocky James said. "The scrimmage went pretty much our way."
The Bobcats' offense under new coordinator Jesse Landeros looked crisp with Vela at the controls, James said.
"Our offense looked real good," said James, who's in his first season as head coach. "Our receivers ran real good routes and everything was smooth."
Defensively, last year's all-stater Alonzo Garza along with end Joshua Perez stood out for Rio Hondo. Linebacker Jack Chavez was also solid.
"Jack stepped in beautifully," James said.
Rio Hondo will take on Valley View in their final scrimmage next week in Pharr.

RAYMONDVILLE 5, JUAREZ-LINCOLN 2: At La Joya, Raymondville played most of the scrimmage without starting quarterback Raul Salinas, but still beat Juarez-Lincoln in its first scrimmage of the season.
Raymondville coach Alex Leal said Salinas was injured on the first play of the day but should be ready for the team's season-opener Aug. 29 at Tuloso-Midway. In Salinas' place, Cippy Villarreal threw for 220 yards to pace the Raymondville offense.
"I was really pleased with our effort. (Villarreal) did a great job," Leal said.
As for the Huskies, who were competing against another school for the first time, Leal was impressed by coach Aaron Garcia and his team.
"They are a very scrappy bunch. They were very well coached and were very scrappy," Leal said. "They have a bunch of young kids so they're going to be OK, they're going to be real OK in the next year or so. Those guys are doing a great job of coaching over there."
PROGRESO 2, SANTA ROSA 0: At Santa Rosa, Progreso got two touchdowns from super back Juan Vega to stop the Warriors.
Vega scored first on an eight-yard run and followed it up with a 60-yard burst to lead an all-around solid outing for the Red Ants.
Each team ran series of 20 and 15 plays in a controlled format.
"Our kids played great," Progreso head coach Elvis Hernandez said. "We played well offensively and defensively."
New quarterback Juan Treviño settled in nicely, highlighted by a 40-yard pass to Roger Vasquez as the Red Ants will try to become a more balanced offense in '08.
"Our passing game looked good," Hernandez said. "But they (Santa Rosa) played a defense where we felt we could run on them."
Despite the loss, Santa Rosa head coach Joshua Gonzalez saw some things to build off of.
"There were some positives," Gonzalez said. "We've just gotta look at the tape and correct some things. We alternated a lot of players, including quarterback. There were some pluses. But overall, as a team, we've got a lot of work to do."

Cardinals looks strong in win against Port Isabel
August 16, 2008 - 8:29PM
By ELADIO JAIMEZ RGVSports.com
HARLINGEN - All Manny Gomez wants is a little effort.
Show him a little "want to" and the Harlingen Cardinals head coach is happy.
And against Port Isabel in a scrimmage on Saturday at Boggus Stadium, that's exactly what he got. Harlingen scored three times against PI in the controlled scrimmage then beat PI again 13-0 in the game situation portion of the exhibition contest.
"We got a lot reps to a lot of our kids and we got them exhausted," Gomez said. "And that's what we wanted to do. But I'm really proud of their effort today. They showed a lot of want to. We're going to need a lot of that effort against McHi in Week 0."
Harlingen's offense was under the coaches' watchful eye on Saturday as the Cards have a new-look offense under first-year offensive coordinator Spencer Gantt.
Senior quarterback John Murphy executed the offense as well as could be expected for the first scrimmage and led all scoring drives.
Murphy threw a couple of TD passes to Angel Cantu and Luke Lucio.
Running back Pablo Garza scored another couple of times as the Cardinals' O racked up 427 total yards.
"We really wanted to see how aggressive the offensive line would be and we challenged them today," Gomez said. "There were a few times PI stacked seven men in the box and we still ran. Any other night we would have checked off on the runs, but we really wanted to see how aggressive those linemen would be."
But the story of the game was the Harlingen defense.
Port Isabel didn't score all scrimmage and the Tarpons' offense didn't look too effective.
Harlingen's stop troops caused four turnovers.
"We got what we needed," PI head coach Monty Stumbaugh said. "We got hit right in the mouth. We played hard but we still made a lot of mistakes. But those guys (Harlingen) are good."
Lineman J.B. Gutierrez caused two turnovers and linebacker Matt Torres intercepted one pass.
"As long as I'm in Harlingen, the Cardinals are always gonna be known for playing defense," Gomez said. "The kids swarmed the field today. Our (defensive) line was very aggressive today. We're gonna hang our hat on them this season and they know that. It was very exciting to see what they did out there today."
PI's offense did show some promise.
Junior signal caller Kyle DeMoss was efficient and junior running back Hoe Vega filled in nicely for Diego Garcia, who's out with an injury for about two weeks.
"There were some bright spots," Stumbaugh said. "We didn't practice well on offense this week and it showed. But the guys gave a good effort and we had some questions that were answered for us."

Maybe they moved it from their stadium to bobby lackey but the scrimmage did indeed go on and i was there and i was impressed with the wildcats. Strong running game, good size on the line and the defense was all over the place. It was a good scrimmage for east. Psja memorial had a decent showing especially their running game but all in all this one was dominated by east.
