Just remembered an important line said by the main character Gene's "friend" Finny in the novel A Separate Peace:
You always win at sports.
Agree? Disagree? Have a philosophical explanation?
Gene in the story says something to himself something like, "Like a lot of beliefs and commandments of Finny, this couldn't be true, but I couldn't bring myself to tell him." It's kind of a hero-worship love-hate relationship thing...
But regardless of the story, does the line itself stand to mean something?

...unless of course, you lose? Actually, that was Gene's inner dialogue in A Separate Peace: If you win, someone else loses, so how can you always win at sports?

I think if you compete, and I mean really try to compete, you win in some way. The real losers are those who have never competed. Did that make sense?

Raj Bhavsar — US Men's Gymnastics — I (& most) thought he'd done all to be on the 2004 Olympic team, but was not picked, passed over for another returning to the team from previous Olympics.
For 2008 we got a repeat — he did great at trials and other meets, but was left an alternate again... Now after the top contender (Paul Hamm) and then even the twin brother have left the team with injuries, Raj is finally on the team as of 10 days ago...
But even if he hadn't made it, he'd already won — watch the video...

i see what you guys are trying to say, like a feel good story. But lets take for example oh i dont know...High School Football. What happens when you play for a school who's team is not that good. You end up all 4 years not winning district nor making the playoffs. You lose, and then you graduate. You can never play highschool football again. Theres no winning in that situation.

life lessons hunter........how to accept a loss and move on from it.....(something some of us never learned ;D). teamwork, how to get motivated and stay there, hard work, dedication. lessons you otherwise might not have learned had you not been in that situation. i think that's where the "in sports you always win" comes from
