Defense saves Lafayette in victory over McAllen
Lafayette needed something extraordinary late Wednesday to compensate for its offensive deficiencies in a Colt World Series opening-round game against McAllen, Texas.
Through 10 innings of a thrilling 2-1, 11-inning victory against the South Zone champions, Lafayette was 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Through 10 innings, Lafayette's leadoff hitter reached base twice. Neither scored.
And the host team struck out 11 times while coaxing only two walks.
Yet with Nick Wittgren (seven innings) and Taylor Glaze (four innings) pitching masterfully, Lafayette's stellar defense gave coach Brian Eaton's team an opportunity to win.
"The defense won it for us," said center fielder Tyler Robbins, whose diving catches in the third and fourth saved at least two runs. "It got us out of a lot of tough situations. I try to do the same thing for my pitchers that they do for me when I'm on the mound.
"It was contagious. One guy would make a play, then someone else would. Wittgren pitched really well, and so did Glaze. It's an awesome win. We went 11 innings and played great defense the whole game."
Shortstop Ryan Black turned a nifty double play with the bases loaded and one out in the second, and Glaze, Wittgren and Robbins each threw out a McAllen runner who was trying to take an extra base.
Somehow, Lafayette entered the top of the 11th still tied at 1.
"Our defense was amazing the entire night backing up me and Nick on every single play," Glaze said. "They were outstanding. That gave us the game."
Winning pitcher Glaze led off the 11th with a flyball to left that was misplayed for a three-base error.
"I thought the ball was going to be caught," Glaze said. "I was holding up rounding first, and then our coaches started yelling. I realized I had to run. I took off. I wasn't expecting them to drop it.
"I couldn't tell if they lost it in the lights. I was just running. But when I hit it, I thought they were going to catch it."
With Glaze at third, Eaton and assistant Brian Driver decided to pinch-hit Tyler Dunk for catcher Chad Compton, who struck out three times after a full day of football practice at McCutcheon.
"Chad was starting to wear down a little bit," Eaton said. "Tyler Dunk is kind of that spurt player. When he comes in, things get exciting. He has provided that for us all summer.
"Coach Driver and I were talking about it. Brian said, 'Let's go with it.' Then Tyler goes out there and does that."
That was a line-drive single to left past McAllen's draw-in infield. The single drove in Glaze and won the game.
"It was a straight fastball that I pulled between the third baseman and shortstop," Harrison junior Dunk said. "It was one of those things that come from getting varsity experience as a sophomore."
But after watching the first 10 innings from the dugout, Dunk said Lafayette's defense was the story of Wednesday's game that ended at 11:39 p.m.
"I couldn't be more ecstatic about the way our defense played," Dunk said. "Tyler Robbins and (right fielder) Zach Smeltz made a couple of amazing plays.
"Nick Wittgren threw seven strong innings. All over the place, they were making plays for our pitchers."

For some reason, this isn't getting too much attention. I think its a big deal since there is a lot of local kids playing from La Joya players to Brownsville players.

Link: www.jconline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080809/SPORTS07/808090334/0/SPECIAL McAllen finds hole in Puerto Rican bats McAllen, Texas, pitcher Lupe Lopez took advantage of his opportunity to watch Gurabo, Puerto Rico, play Mexico in the first round of the Colt World Series. The right-hander showed up for Friday's start against Puerto Rico with his own scouting report. "We found out that the curveball was hard for them to hit," Lopez said. "I decided to throw curveballs and throw them off balance." McAllen scored four first-inning runs, more than enough to back Lopez's four-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory over Puerto Rico at Loeb Stadium. Lopez, who also snapped out of a hitting slump with a long home run in the second inning, walked two, hit two batters and struck out five. "He said, 'We'll just throw curveballs most of the game,' and I said all right," said McAllen catcher Roland Garcia, who doubled, walked twice and scored two runs. "We scout them first, then we decide where he wants to throw them and everything." Puerto Rico starter Juan Pizarro walked the first two batters he faced. Gurabo manager Edwin Correa quickly brought in Michael De Aza, who allowed Alvaro Moreno's infield single to load the bases. Beto Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch for McAllen's first run, and Cristo Torres's RBI single made it 2-0. Moreno scored on a groundout, and a throwing error brought in Garcia with the fourth run. "My starter told me at the last minute that his arm was hurting, so it changed the whole plan," Correa said. "He was already in the hole. Those are things that happen in baseball." Lopez coaxed 11 ground-ball outs. He worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third and a two-on, none-out situation in the seventh. Joshua Correa went 2-for-2 with a triple for Puerto Rico. McAllen needed a victory after Wednesday's 11-inning, 2-1 loss to Lafayette. The Longhorns also lost their first South Zone tournament game before recovering to win the championship. "That's one of the strongest teams in this tournament," Garcia said of Puerto Rico.

McAllen whips Mexico
It's obvious South Zone champion McAllen, Texas, has a flair for the Colt World Series dramatic.
After losing a 2-1, 11-inning heartbreaker to Lafayette on Wednesday, McAllen has positioned itself for a berth in the medal round.
Third baseman Alvaro Moreno and second baseman Cristo Torres each went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs Saturday afternoon in McAllen's 11-1, five-inning victory against Mexico.
McAllen stunned Gurabo, Puerto Rico 6-0 on Friday and now is 2-1 in the Red Division. If McAllen defeats the Czech Republic in Monday's 2:30 p.m. game, it will earn one of the Red Division's two semifinal berths.
Moreno, who is batting .700 (7-for-10) with three runs in the CWS, and Torres who is batting .600 (6-for-10) with a run and three RBIs, have led the way for McAllen.
"It's awesome," Moreno said. "After we lost against Lafayette, to come back and get two wins is great. We have to come ready to play Monday against the Czechs."
Moreno, who singled home a third-inning run and doubled home another in the fourth against Mexico, is enjoying himself in Lafayette.
"I feel real comfortable in this stadium," Moreno said. "I'm hitting the ball, and it's falling. I'm having good luck."
Torres also likes Loeb Stadium's green backdrop in center field,
"I've been hitting the ball good the whole tournament," Torres said. "So has Alvaro. He has been hitting better than me. He is the No. 3 batter and is bringing the team up."
Which is what McAllen manager Jorge Salinas expects from the players who bat in the Nos. 3 and 4 slots.
"They have been pretty hot," Salinas said. "Those are my solids. I have two boys struggling, and (Moreno and Torres) are picking up the tempo right now.
"Our strongest thing is the mound. I have four or five pitchers who can go the whole game."
Right-hander Adrian Garza pitched a seven-hitter against Mexico with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Now, McAllen is one step from the semifinals.
"I will take it game by game and see what happens," Salinas said. "I'm happy with the way we have responded after losing to Lafayette. I'm proud of the boys. They know what they have to do."
Jorge Salinas Jr. and Andrew Arteaga each was 2-for-3 for McAllen, which pounded out 13 hits. Center fielder Lupe Lopez homered for the South Zone champs.
Adolfo Lopez and Manuel Ortega each had two hits for Mexico.
