My brother is going to Vegas and asked me for some advice on what to do and see, but I haven't been in years, so I'm calling on the collective experience from you guys.
Here are the details: Brother and wife only/we're sitting his kids. More shows and sights than gambling About 1k to spend on entertainment (flight and hotel already paid) 3 nights(evening arrival)/4 days(noon departure)

The shows are great, but can be very expensive! Sometimes, they have little promotional contests where you can win tickets. Most casinos have some variation of contest near the entrance of the casino (or the very back) to draw you inside and get you ready for some spending.

The Caesar Palace Mall and casino,,,, we liked it the best... Visit hoover dam... its about 1 hour drive... you can take a helicopter ride from a indian casino right before the Dam.. and it only cost $35 per person.... it is awesome... heck of a lot cheaper than what they charged if yo would have left from the airport helipads with a tour group...
I went to Red Canyon... its a trail/preserve/museum, only $5 per vehicle, and you can spend a whole morning or evening as you see the valley of las vegas from 2500 ft up.... make sure you have some tennis shoes or boots.. i have some pictures but there is a website they could see also.
you have the Sirens Show at treasure island, the fountains at the Belagio, the moving statues at Caesars Palace, the Carnival in the sky at the Rio... you got the view from the top of world(stratusphere tower), the fremont experiance... (downtown.... the 60's are still alive and well down there...
we walked the whole strip in two days... the first day we started from one side of the strip and walked into every casino and compared the setups and the decoration and on the second we did the same for the other side and saw the free outdoor shows available on the strip...
Red Rock Canyon is a must see i think... just 30 mins away and a full days worth of activity...

we went to a presentation (a timeshare) which we signed up on the day we arrived into our hotel.. they gave us free gambling vouchers, a show 75% off and other good stuff... just dont get sold on the time share... if you go with the mentality that your only going to be thier see the presentation then your out, yo could be back within 2-3 hours... but let me warn you... it is tempting

The light-display show on the old Vegas strip is a "MUST SEE" IMO. I believe the intrevals aren't very frequent (Maybe 2 or 3 times a night), but anywhere you stand to watch is a good seat and people aren't crowding near you to see.
