Is it just me or has the commercialization of the forum killed what it used to be? I first started posting here three years ago under a different user name. Back then (and its funny how 2005 seems like it was decades ago) it seemed like the forum had a different tone, a different mojo. It gave us something entertaining to distract themselves from our desk jobs, classes ect.
I feel like RGVsports.com succeeded beautifully in this role; it's terrifying to contemplate how many LF/PI/Donna posters’ hours have been spent roaming around the topics. Or how many articles Todd Mavreles and Wade Baker have poached off of our info.
We've made friends through this forum, people we would have never met otherwise. We’ve gotten together through pre-game tailgates. Asked where the best ceviche or burger place is. Some of us shared the wonder of having kids on the forum, the sense of accomplishment of getting a PHD, winning the lotto, and even read along as a blossoming pendejete comedian went from selling elotes to being a mini-chafo radio celebrity. And who could forget the particularly hilarious threads that started out as pre-pubescent teenagers asking for relationship advice? I myself have met some cool people here and I bet any of you have yet to come across a truly hateable person on this forum. That's quite a ratio.
Sure we were juvenile. The Band Wars, the resurgence of LF and Weslaco goobers. The always entertaining EE posters. I can remember TONS of flame wars and fights and that’s not even counting the NEO-Glutes exchanges. People posted real information about other posters. Rumors where erroneously spread but things changed. Slowly but surely, they did. Chuck was mad admin and people behaved accordingly. Then I think the higher ups noticed our little forum. We did, after all, generate over half a million posts in the Sports Pub and High School football section alone. A lot of us took notice when they started putting up ads in the load pages and a lot of us knew that it wasn’t long before something like this happened.
I’m not opposed to this new forum. It’s gonna take a lot of getting used to because a lot of the old features that we’re all so dependent on have changed (quote, edit, post pics.) And I also realize that no matter how gay and compassionate I write this, its not gonna sway the bean counters to change it back. So instead I’ll offer a hearty farewell to the old forum and the mass amount of posters that probably wont register here because it seems like too much of a hassle.
Maybe this new forum will pick up and it’ll bring a new wave of posters; a new generation of overzealous homers that need nothing more than a photoshop war to calm them down. Maybe.
Untill then we have nothing but our memories of the Brokeback Neo, the Nachos or Got Milk references. (You cant even access the old site for archival purposes, which kinda sucks.) The sense of community in that forum was something that was warm, witty, quick and stupendously funny. We will miss it.
