BROOKLYN, NY -- At a New York hospital, where the motto is "Do No Harm," the apparent indifference of doctors and nurses is stunning. What you're about to see is hard to believe. It shows a woman in obvious distress but being ignored by hospital staff. She had been waiting for help inside a Brooklyn psychiatric emergency room for 24-hours. It was a wait that proved fatal. By the time a nurse kicks the psychiatric patient, she's been sprawled on a city emergency room floor for an hour. During that hour, two Kings County Hospital security guards see her, but apparently don't do anything to help. The first walks by and leaves. The second looks from his chair. About ten minutes later, the tape shows a doctor walking by. He apparently looks down at the woman, but keeps on going. Robert Cohen of Kirkland & Ellis says "it's an emergency room, it's not a bus terminal." The 49-year-old Brooklyn woman would die on that King's County emergency room floor, but not right away. The tape shows she is moving her legs and even rolls to her side, trying to get up. Robert cohen says "people who are in desperate need for services, care and attention come here to be treated and get better. They don't come here to die alone." Advocates for the mentally ill say this security video from earlier this month shows why immediate reforms are needed at Kings County Hospital. These advocates also claim the woman's medical records were altered. While she's on the floor at 6 AM, the New York Civil Liberties Union says hospital records were filed stating she was "awake, up and alert at that very time." Beth Haroules of the New York Civil Liberties Union says "we were absolutely appalled to receive medical documentation, kept in accordance with New York state law, that is completely contradicted by video surveillance feeds." Last year, advocates sued the hospital, calling it "a chamber of filth, decay, indifference, and danger." At the time, the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation said this was a lie. But now with this security video, city officials have launched an investigation and have fired or suspended half a dozen staffers including the doctor who passed her by. While the camera does not show what happens off-screen, the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation says it has increased staff and training. It will now check on all psychiatric patients every 15 minutes. This reform comes amid an ongoing investigation by the U.S. Justice Department into alleged patient abuses at Kings County Hospital. © 2008 NBC HERES THE LINK TO THE VIDEO: www.wkyc.com/video/default.aspx?maven_playerId=articleplayer&maven_referralPlaylistId=playlist&maven_referralObject=781887749

Absolutely ridiculous.

heard about that, saw the video too. its pretty disturbing how the security guards see her on the ground and just go on about their business. makes you wonder of the employees are the ones who should be in a mental hospital.

weird... There must have been a reason explaining why she was left unattended like that... Was it money issue? Maybe she was regular and the staff knew of her quirky behavior...

THATS IT ....her quirky behavior is a good reason why MEDICAL DOCTORS ignored an older woman sprawled out on the floor... good thing you cleared that up buzzard... although...why would you let a crazy woman pass out in a hospital lobby.?? i mean if it was (which it obviously wasnt) just her being crazy ...dont you think they'd expect it and isolate her from the general public every time she showed up.... also...the fact that they documented her being up and about at the same time her lifeless body was on the floor for the world to see is inexcusable....proper documentation is key ...first thing they teach you

People are passed out on the streets all the time. Furthermore, people in place like New York are used to seeing stupid/freaky things like this... they've been de-sensitized to it. Nurse 1 - "Oh, it's crazy girl again." Nurse 2 - "we don't have any cookies and milk to give her and send her on her way." Nurse 1 - "eh, just let her take a nap" Isolate her... where and how? Finally, get off your damn high-horse. No need for a sarcastic tone.

i've worked in 2 different hospitals, one in houston and one in edinburg. in houston, we saw 100's of "regulars" that came in to the ER for any reason at all. some of them had mental conditions and seeing them sprawled out on the floor wasn't an usual thing, however, we were instructed, NO MATTER WHAT DEPARTMENT YOU'RE IN OR WHAT YOUR JOB TITLE IS you must help them up and make sure they are ok. the doctor could even lose his license over this. 24 hr wait in an EMERGENCY room is just ridiculous.

It does seem that many who work in hospitals anywhere seem to start getting desensitized... Too often their faces show it. As far as mental hosptals, I know some of them get tired of having to physically support or restrain certain patients. Still, it's just too cold that so many of them could just pass her by, as in, "Oh, it's so and so again."

i think once i worked in a hospital i was more sensitive to the needs of those people that were there. i know a lot of the reason's why they wouldn't have helped her, and not a single one makes any sense. this is a terrible thing that happened and there's no excuse.

Apparently you are or were an exception. I took someone to an emergency room down here with a 3-4 inch gash in his head. No bone break. We kept pressure on it so it was ok for a while. An hour or more after we got there, it blew. I mean blood leaking down his head, neck, onto the furniture, and floor. The people around us moved to other chairs. One got up and went to the bathroom and got paper towels as I went to the desk people to ask for help. The folks at the desk? They slid a towel underneath the registration window. That sped us up. 45 minutes later we were moved into the "real emergency room. The entire visit lasted about 6 hours before the staples were planted into this guy's head. The worst part? I personally know people in Matamoros who have had loved ones die and the ambulance showed up the day before the burial. Mexico has socialized medicine. I was just pissed off. It could have been worse, I guess.

well that's what we were told in training corby. it was part of our "partners in caring" pr campaign. i'm not sure how much the suits believed in it but i did have to come down to the er and provide basic first aid a couple of times. we all had to be certified in it.
