With the exeception of Harlingen South and maybe Mission Vets, what other Valley program can boast a better list of accolades in their first 12 years? Of course, things were a little different back then. Only the DC made the playoffs. Now, schools with losing records can make the playoffs. So here is a better question: How long did it take your school to win their first district title? 8 years for Lopez to win thei first District title and 9 years for the first playoff win.

E-E won their first district title in their 2nd season (1939) w/o winning a single district game. (by default). Their next district title was during their 11th season (1948). But, once again, they won by default. First outright district title wasn't until their 21st season (1959). How did the win by default and by not winning a single district game. Exlanation???

In football, Mission vets started out HOT when they first entered the scene, but have been on a steady decline. You may be right...

yeah, vets started out really good. goes to show how high powered mission was, and still has the potential to be. i was surprised at how competitive both teams were even after the split.

The other two teams had UIL violations, and were disqualified. E-E was not ready, so they did not go to the playoffs. The same thing happend in 1948, as the 2nd place finisher, E-E got the nod after the 1st place team got the DQ. This was E-E first playoff appearence.

for what reason did they get DQ'd?? This is from that special the Monitor did a couple years ago: 1939: "Rio Hondo was then disqualified for failing to send reports on non-conference games to the district committee. The South Zone title was then awarded to Lyford, but E-E ended up with it after it was discovered that Lyford used ineligible players." 1948: "Edcouch-Elsa is 6-4-1 overall in District 44-B. Lost to Lyford 24-0 to finish second in district at 1-1, but awarded title after Lyford was disqualified due to rules violations."

Well now E-E is a powerhouse and that is our goal to become a powerhouse as well.

I guess that's the way that it was back then. I can recall some teams that didn't make the playoffs in those days because it was only one or two teams per district that would make the playoffs.

I guess that's the way that it was back then. I can recall some teams that didn't make the playoffs in those days because it was only one or two teams per district that would make the playoffs. Originally, the only team that made the playoffs was the district champion. Around mid-1980s, the UIL changed the playoff system to allow a playoff berth to the district runner up also. I guess there were too many instances of ties for the district championship, in which case a coin-flip would decided who would go to the playoffs. The Mid-1990s the UIL introduced the 3-team playoff system. It was a little ridiculous because you had teams in some districts that had losing records that were making the playoffs. And for this upcoming season, the UIL will grant 4 teams into the playoffs. Now it's just getting ridiculous....

It would be too short and boring. The more games the better. I guess we should feel luck that a team can go upto 16 games per year compared to those past season with not even 10 games.

its obvious no 5a team will make it close the only 4a team maybe is EE 3a possible La Villa can happen the only thing wrong with valley football players is that they got so frightened whenever they have to play a big black team. i don't wanna make it sound racial but almost everyone in this thing knows its true. why would you be scared to play somoeone cause of color its stupid
