Valley Roundup: Teams scrimmage, prepare for openers

ALAMO - PSJA Memorial head coach Gus Cavazos said the Wolverines looked at a lot of players in the scrimmage against Brownsville Porter on Friday.
The Cowboys beat the Wolverines behind two touchdowns in the controlled portion of the scrimmage. PSJA Memorial picked up one TD in the live action portion but lost 2-1.
We gave up a couple of big plays," Cavazos said. "But it's a long process. We're working on learning a new offense and putting in the defense."
McAllen High 6, Brownsville Hanna 1: At McAllen, Tony Harris said he was pleased with the Bulldogs' performance against the Golden Eagles.
"Everybody played pretty well," Harris said. "We were able to look at a lot of different players. We are still auditioning people, but we got a lot accomplished.
In the controlled portion of the scrimmage, the Bulldogs outscored the Golden Eagles 5-0. In live action, each team scored one touchdown.
PSJA High 4, La Joya 2: At Pharr, the Bears received solid games from quarterback Trey Ramirez, fullback Angel Marroquin and tailback Ossie Cantu.
"We did a good job running the ball," PSJA High coach Mel Rios said. "But, we still need a lot of work."
PSJA outscored La Joya, 2-1 in the controlled portion of the scrimmage and the live action portion.
Brownsville Pace 4, Edinburg Economedes 2: At Edinburg, the Vikings moved the ball well on the ground and in the air, coach Rene Medrano said.
"Danny Aguirre ran the ball well and we threw the ball well in the in the controlled scrimmage. We had a couple of big plays," Medrano said.
San Benito 14, Mission High 0: At San Benito, even though his Eagles lost by two touchdowns, coach Tom Lee was happy about how his team did against the No. 9 team in the Rio Grande Valley.
San Benito had played in a scrimmage and the Eagles were competing in their first.
"I'm very pleased. We really did a good job," Lee said.
Edcouch-Elsa 7, Gregory-Portland 7: At Gregory, the Yellowjackets gained more confidence and preparation for their season-opening trip to Corpus Christ Calallen next week. Edcouch-Elsa won the controlled portion of the scrimmage 1-0 but lost the open part 7-6.
"We stayed up with them," Yellowjackets coach Joe Solis said.
Rio Hondo 6, Valley View 1: At Hidalgo, the Bobcats earned a win over the Class 4A Tigers, winning the controlled portion 3-0 and the game part 3-1.
"It was a lot better of a scrimmage. Valley View has gotten a lot better. They were a lot better than they were last year," Rio Hondo coach Rocky James said.
Mercedes 16, Port Isabel 2: At Port Isabel, Alex Treviño scored four times, including three on big plays, as the Tigers topped Port Isabel.
Mercedes won the controlled portion 4-2 and in two live quarters, 14-0.
Treviño scored on a 42-yard touchdown and a 50-yard reception from Albert Chavez during the controlled scrimmage.
Donna 21, Harlingen South 21: At Donna, Redskins coach Manny Moreno's philosophy for every game is to play hard until the game ends.
Luckily for Moreno, his team has that philosophy as the Redskins scored a touchdown late in the second quarter of the live scrimmage to end up in a tie with Harlingen South.
Harlingen High 23, Rio Grande City 16: At Harlingen, the Cardinals looked sharp in beating Rio Grande City in the controlled portion of the scrimmage.
The teams also played two quarters, which ended in a 14-14 tie.
PSJA North 35, Brownsville Lopez 7: At Brownsville, Romeo Cuellar, Ray Ramirez and Andrew Villarreal scored touchdowns as the Raiders ran over the Lobos during the game situation portion.
"I'm happy with our offensive execution," North coach Bruce Bush said.
Hidalgo 23, Tuloso-Midway 14: At Corpus Christi, Hidalgo continued its maturation process with a good showing. The teams went four quarters of game-like conditions with the first units.
The Pirates got two scores from quarterback Steve Pedraza. Hidalgo also recorded a safety and a defensive touchdown.
LA Joya-Palmview 1, La Feria 0: At La Joya, the Lions and Lobos played each other tight in an abbreviated scrimmage.
Each team got 20 plays with the starters and another 15 with backups before officials called it off due to lightning in the area.
Palmview earned the night's lone score.
Santa Maria 4, MMA 1: At Harlingen, Santa Maria took the controlled scrimmage 1-0 and won the live scrimmage 21-7.
The Cougars received another solid night from QB Andy De La Rosa, who connected on a 45-yard bomb with Robert Ramos. Ramos later added a 1-yard dive. Fullback Martin Lugo scored on a 20-yard jaunt.
Lyford 4, Falfurrias 0: At Lyford, the Bulldogs won the controlled portion 1-0 and live quarters 20-0. Lyford will travel to Hebbronville next week to open the regular season.
Santa Rosa 2, Brownsville St. Joseph 1: At Brownsville, Santa Rosa went on a 10-play drive to score on the initial 15-play set and also scored during the live quarters.
Gonzalez said the Warriors got great nights from linebacker Ryan Villarreal, the defensive line and z-back Josh Watrons.
