Four Rio Grande Valley football players are among the state's best of the best, according to the 2008 issue of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, which hit newsstands this week.
San Benito's Arturo Lopez, Andrew Alvarado of Weslaco East, Edcouch-Elsa's Aaron Tanguma and Enrique Guz-man of La Villa were each named preseason all-state by DCTF and its Web site, www.TexasFootball.com.
Lopez, an Associated Press first team all-state pick a year ago, was named preseason all-state on the defensive line for the upcoming season.
Lopez racked up 163 total tackles (96 solo) eight sacks, 35 pressures, six forced fumbles, two recoveries and an interception for the 'Hounds in '07. He was also a Valley Morning Star first-team all-valley selection.
In Class 4A, two Valley players earned DCTF all-state nods.
Weslaco East running back Andrew Alvarado, who rushed for 1,724 yards for the Wildcats' first-ever playoff team last season, earned a spot in the backfield. Alvarado also scored 15 touchdowns.
Staying in 32-4A, Edcouch-Elsa tight end Aaron Tanguma, a 6-foot-5, 260 pound target, joins Alvarado on the 4A team.
Tanguma accumulated 350 yards receiving for the Jackets last season.
Also, La Villa offensive lineman Enrique Guzman earned a spot on DCTF's Class A preseason all-state team.
Guzman was a key member up front for a La Villa offense that exploded in 2007 with AP Class A offensive player of the year J.D. Cisneros at quarterback. He will be one the Cardinals' leaders in '08.
In addition, Rio Hondo was the only Valley team to land on any of the publication's Top 25 teams, coming in at No. 25 in 3A.
The Bobcats were 11-1 in 2007, advancing to the area round of the playoffs. A slew of starters return for former defensive coordinator Rocky James, who was elevated to head coach in the offseason.
