Well....Rio Hondo had a couple of original Donna folks playing for them that knew what TRADITION meant and it spilled over in '98 and '99....just to get things started. My brother and I were instrumental, among others, in what has become a TRADITION in RH. I was RH's first 1,000 yd rusher in over 16 yrs(a milestone at the time) in '98....and my brother was a DE on RH's first playoff team in over 26 years. Before I ever cracked a thousand yds.....THERE WERE far better players that couldn't do the same in the previous 15 yrs. The last RB to do it was Barry Watters in '82.Guys like....Lino Garza,Fred Garza, Mario Menchaca, Xavier Hernandez...etc. But, because I worked hard, made a commitment and something inside me told me I could do something nobody had done before in a longtime. I ran three miles everyday, ran sprints, lifted weights, did agility drills, and prayed. I was fortunate enough to fulfill my goal of being a one thousand yd rusher because of my TEAMMATES. In '98 we were poised to make a run at the district title,IMO, but because of unfortunate events we were left with a 3-7 record that could've been 9-1...with the only loss to Mathis. We played Raymondville close going into the 4th qtr down 14-12....eventually losing 34-12. Then to La Feria 28-20. Lost to Hidalgo 12-0. Beat SR 49-16. Then played PI close...losing 21-14. Lost to Lyford 20-14. And finally beating Progreso 20-12. I arguably started up again the TRADITION of 1,000yd rushers in RH....yet none of the current players know about that. My brother Roger Alaniz(folks in football and powerlifting circles know him.) Helped in beating PI and did his part on the '99 team to reach the playoffs. He was an all-district pick and became a region, state, and national champ in powerlifting. But, IMO, the winning attitude against PI and district started with the '99 team that actually got it done....they're the team that deserves the TOTAL credit. There were great teams back in '77,'82-'83,'88,'92-'93...that had more talent than the '99 team, but they were the resurrection of the BROTHERHOOD that actually started in the '72-'73 seasons....that's right. The BROTHERHOOD now....was alive and well back then. Just ask players from that era. It's good to have been a BOBCAT.

are those 1990 scores correct? Wow, for their sake I hope not. I really hadn't looked at it closely. If it's correct, well their program has come a long ways, they should be proud.

are those 1990 scores correct? Unfortunately they are correct... Not sure what happened there. They went from 8-2-0 in 1988 to 0-9-0 two seasons later in 1990, then bounced back to have four consecutive winning seasons from '92-'95. Here is what I've found for 1988 and 1989 today... I'm at work currently so I'll update the original image when I get home. Rio Hondo played La Villa twice each season, once as a non-district game and once in district. * - district games (District 32-3A both years) 1988 (8-2-0, 6-2-0 in district)La Villa WIN 35-0 Port Isabel* LOSS 14-34 Hidalgo* WIN (score unknown) Santa Rosa* WIN (score unknown) La Feria* WIN 12-7 Brownsville St. Joseph WIN 8-7 Lyford* WIN 20-8 La Villa* WIN 42-0 Progreso* WIN 47-26 Sharyland* LOSS 14-26 1989 (4-6-0, 3-5-0 in district)La Villa WIN 44-0 Port Isabel* LOSS 0-39 Hidalgo* WIN 35-0 Santa Rosa* LOSS 21-23 La Feria* LOSS 7-38 Brownsville St. Joseph LOSS 12-20 Lyford* WIN 22-13 La Villa* WIN 24-0 Progreso* LOSS 15-20 Sharyland* LOSS 0-52

RH has always had the talent, but for all sorts of reasons....we were more of "coulda, woulda, shoulda" teams. The '92-93 teams were right there on the cusp from '95-'98 we had some of THE BEST talent RH has had. We just couldn't get it done.
I want to tell a story about the '97 team. The seniors then as 8th graders and Freshmen went 3-0(they played twice as freshmen.) against PI during those two years. ALOT of that team was depleted due to drugs, gangs, grades,or just bad attitudes. Coach Powell was a stickler and held all of us accountable. When they were seniors only a handful played.
For you PI folks, Noe Montalvo or anyone that played as freshmen from the '97 squad will tell you that RH "could've" beaten PI had that group stayed together all four years.
Of course, that's irrelevant, but it was supposed to be the beginning of a new tradition. We had to wait until '99 to get to the playoffs.

Similar thing happen to the 1989 PI team that missed the playoffs... lost plenty of talent to some new gang that used to call themselves the orphans... no BS! That was my class!
