Some Valley schools set to begin practice today

Today is one day that has grown men downright nervous.
It's not the type of nervousness of the uneasy variety. It can best be described as anxiousness, similar to kids tossing and turning the night before Christmas excited about what gifts await them in the morning.
For Rio Grande Valley football teams that did not have spring practice, two-a-days begin today. Some coaches admitted to being nervous about the first day of practice because of the new beginnings it brings.
"Every year is a new year no matter if I was coaching junior high or Rio Hondo or (PSJA Memorial)," Wolverines coach Gus Cavazos said. "The kids and the coaches come in with their eyes wide open looking for anything positive. It is just an exciting time."
Edinburg High coach Joey Caceres said he expected to have trouble catching some shut-eye Sunday night once the nervousness over the first day of practice kicks in.
"You don't sleep the night before," said Caceres, who is entering his second season as the Bobcats' head coach. "I don't think any head coach ever sleeps the night before the first practice or any practice. There is always a lot of adrenalin and a lot of things going in and out of your head.
"You want to make sure you cover everything and don't forget things. You want to make sure you cross all your ‘Ts' and dot all your ‘Is' and make sure that everything is ready to go. I know the kids feel the same way. I know they are not going to sleep Sunday night."
Schools that participated in spring training begin preparations for the season next Monday. To some coaches the first day of practice never grows old.
"It's just really exciting," said Cavazos, who moved to the tri-cities from Class 3A Rio Hondo during the offseason. "In fact, it's just a rush. As far as differences between classes, football is football. I have always said that. Anywhere you work, the kids are going to be great.
"It's just an exciting time. We are just chomping at the bit, waiting to get started."
While Cavazos becomes accustomed to his new surroundings, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln coach Aaron Garcia will conduct the first-ever official practice at the new school.
La Joya ISD is now home to three high schools. La Joya High School and La Joya-Palmview will compete at the Class 5A level while Juarez-Lincoln will compete as a Class 4A program.
"The day before, you are always nervous," Garcia said. "You always have some jitters. Even as a player and as a coach I would think, ‘Here it is, tomorrow.' I have been thinking about it since (Friday Night). I guess now it's different because I am a head coach.
"I'm just curious to see in the first few days how we will set the tone for the rest of the season."
