Colleges interested in RGV Players?

It used to be about having $$ if you didn't live in a 'big city'.

In the past, if you were GREAT, they would come to you.

The top 20 in each position don't need money, the colleges will find you.

If you are from 20-50 in your position, you needed to attend camps, etc.

Now, with YOUTUBE, coaches can watch from their office, home, anywhere, if you put a good highlight real on youtube and have the stats that Stephens, Mishak, Springer had, coaches will find you.


With YOUTUBE, it's easier now for those 20-50 ranked players.

but should it be the players job, or the coaches and parents. IMO the coaches and parents should be helping get their kid a scholarship.

does Weslaco QB or that other player have a youtube video? I think he has a lot to prove this year, his stock will rise or plummet depending on the success of the team.

I can tell you what helped. He attended a showcase being held by Oklahoma State earlier this summer. It was held at Hardin Baylor (by the way, lots of great folks at UMHB). He ranked 3rd behind Drew Allen and the QB from CP Vista Ridge. Also, playing at the State Championship (7 on 7) also helped tremendously. That's where the ACC folks were. They were actually at the Texans tourney then came and watched at A&M.

I've seen the Weslaco QB when he played against us and I have to say he can pass and run with the ball. I also would see him on Channel 17 and I don't think Mishak could've done what he did without him. I hope he doesn't beat us again this year.

I really don't know. There was that Drew Allen, the Cedar Park kid, three black QB's, and one other kid that was built like a Mack truck.

Trevino is one of the top players in South Texas By Jeff Howe

College recruiters do no often find themselves traveling into another country to scout players but in the case of Mercedes running back Alex Trevino he might as well be. Playing in South Texas near the U.S.-Mexico border, Trevino is hoping that coaches will take note of his talent.

As some prospects go through the recruiting process, some can become upset with where they are ranked and what rating they receive.
Others might not like the fact that they their favorite school has not extended an offer. There are even a few prospects that might have an offer. Then there are those prospects that just want to get noticed by college coaches.

Mercedes running back Alex Trevino falls into the latter category. “I’ve gotten some letters but that’s about it,” said Trevino about how the recruiting process has gone for him thus far.

It is not because Trevino lacks talent because he has more than most running backs in the state can claim. Last season Trevino helped the Tigers advance to the playoffs and by pacing the offense with more than 1,100 yards on the ground and nearly 400 receiving while scoring a combined 23 touchdowns in just 11 games. Just for kicks, Trevino also added three touchdowns on special teams in 2007.

“The offensive line, that’s all I have to say,” said Trevino as to what makes him a successful ball carrier. “My offensive line is why I’m great. All of my teammates are great. If it all comes together we should have a great season.”

Trevino also is not getting noticed because he lacks athletic ability either. At 5-feet-11-inches and 170 pounds he has a solid build for a back and has room to add bulk onto his frame. He is also lightning quick and has outstanding speed with a 4.5 clocking in 40. If one needed more proof as to how fast he is, he did take third place at the Class 4A state track meet in the 200 meters during the spring.

It could simply be because of the age old proverb – location, location, location.

Trevino plays his prep ball in deep South Texas as Mercedes lies on US Highway 83 between Harlingen and McAllen, merely a rocks throw from the United States border with Mexico. Prospects from The Valley do not often get looks but there have been exceptions in recent years, including in the Class of 2008 as Los Fresnos offensive lineman Mario Benavidez signed with Louisville while teammate Eloy Atkinson signed with North Texas. Also in this past recruiting cycle, Weslaco running back Mishak Rivas was statistically one of the top backs in Texas and signed with Texas State in February. In 2007 McAllen native Bradley Stephens signed with Texas A&M and should contribute for the Aggies at running back this fall.

But while Trevino waits to see if he will join these outstanding talents at the next level, he is getting ready for what should be a big senior season. Trevino and Mercedes recently competed at the 7 on 7 State Tournament in College Station. The Tigers were involved in one of the most exciting games of the tournament when they defeated Arlington High 61-59 in a four-overtime thriller in pool play.

“It feels great,” Trevino said with a smile on his face following the game. “I’m just so happy that we won. This is real good for us to get some good work in for the season.”

The work that Trevino and his teammates have put in paid off at the tournament as the Tigers advanced to the championship bracket in Big School field and lost a close 48-41 contest to Lewisville Hebron in bracket play.

“We’ve been working all summer real hard,” Trevino said. “We are working on our speed, and you can tell because teams are having a hard time catching us out here. We are getting bigger and hitting the weights.”

Not only is Trevino hoping that a big senior season will help Mercedes win a district title in a tough 32-4A and advance deep into the playoffs, but it will hopefully help his recruiting stock as well.

“Please look at me,” Trevino stated when asked if he had one thing to say to recruiters. “I just want to go to college and play somewhere for someone.”
