Mercedes doesnt have more money, the outlets do. Pretty soon the outlet mall is gonna buy Mercedes and change the town name to Outlet. the outlet tigers? you know those fashion people always need to match, and that name doesnt match. so you will be known as the outlet fighting shoppers

After the city name change, they should also rename the HS mascot. Instead of the tigers, it should be the Chargers.... The OUTLET CHARGERS! It has such a spark to it... what do you think TC?

Problem Solved MERCEDES - The future is looking pretty bright in the Queen City.
At least for the leisure-minded.
In an effort to improve the quality of life in this Mid-Valley town, city officials plan to budget $50,000 to $60,000 for the upcoming fiscal year to conduct a feasibility study for a multi-event sports complex, Mercedes Assistant City Manager Michelle Leftwich said Friday.
Planning for the sports complex is in the preliminary stages but Leftwich said the complex could house a natatorium, baseball, softball and soccer fields, as well as a football stadium.
The stadium would be used by the Mercedes school district for the Mercedes High School football team, she said.
Leftwich said the Mercedes school district and the city have met several times to discuss the needs of the community for such a facility. She said expenses would be shared.
"This would be a joint venture," Leftwich said. "But we need that feasibility study first to see what our needs are."
The biggest undertaking within this project could be the construction of a new football stadium for the Tigers football team.
The old stadium is adjacent to the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show grounds.
Mercedes parks and recreation board chairman Oscar Montoya said there had been talks about renovating the antiquated stadium.
But when Mayor Joel Quintanilla - the driving force behind this project - first discussed construction of the complex, Montoya said it quickly became a viable option.
"This has been discussed for close to a year now," Montoya said. "This is an opportunity to take care of the citizens of Mercedes and bring in outside people too. Mercedes is pro-education and pro-extracurricular activities. This is just another way to try and improve the quality of life in Mercedes."
Several phone calls were placed to Quintanilla's cell phone, but he could not be reached for comment.
Aside from the other facilities, Montoya said a community center and man-made lake could be part of the complex.
Particulars haven't been finalized and a budget hasn't been assigned for the project.
As of now, the city has already spent about $30,000 on a consultant to help with a parks and open space master plan, Leftwich said.
The plan was submitted to and accepted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, giving the city an opportunity to apply for grants for the purpose of funding the project.
Mercedes school board president Danny Salinas said the school district was excited about the possibility of a new sports complex, especially the new football stadium.
"We're (school district) very excited to be invited to be part of the success of Mercedes," Salinas said. "There's a great need for something like this in our city."

Then you could call it the "Border" Classic... because god-forbid every special event has "border" as part of their title.
