Looking at the pressure map, green and yellow are high pressure. They serve as a shield against these systems.
Think of it this way: take a plate and pour some water in it. The water flows freely because there is no pressure resistance...low pressure. Now take a straw and blow into a spot...pour some more water as well. Where you are blowing air, that is high pressure. the water goes around it.
Same concept...now, that does not take in the corealis effect which naturally turns the cane north, or the tradewinds, but the high pressure plays a huge part in all this.
Right now there is a huge high pressure system over Florida in it is pushing to extend over us. That pressure shield will bounce it below us.
It all going to depend on where the high pressure line ends as the storm gets closer. If the high pressure settles over us, we'll be ok and the storm will bounce south of us. If the line settles on us...well...We're gone get a little wind....

doesn't our geography play a big part in us getting hit? i can remember a few scares where it was said that a storm was gonna hit us but by the time it got past the yucatan, it was already dying......i'm ready for a storm, but i think it's highly unlikely that we'll get hit.....

Updated models put us at the northern tip of the storm path. High pressure over Texas is creating that "shield" I was talking about.

Maybe, eventough it makes landfall just south of us the heavy rains contained in the storm are in the northern part of it.
