I remember we played Monterrey Tech but can't remember the year. When I see the tables it had to be in 1967 the year of Hurricane Beulah. I don't remember not playing two games but one in that year. We used to practice at the port warehouses during that time due to damage and flooding. I might be wrong. Need to inquire with some people that played with me then. I couldn't find any record of PI playing Monterrey in '67. The two games that were cancelled due to Beulah were against Brownsville St. Joseph's (9/22) and Sharyland (9/29). In the 1968 Football Previews, they all have PI's record from 1967 listed as 4-3-1, which is what I have. PI played a team from Mexico City in '65, could that possibly be what you are remembering? Thanks for straightening that out. You are probably right. It might be that I mistook that game for the Marine Military Academy game. And it probably was in 65 of which I was a sophomore then. What was the name of that Mexico team we played? Do you know? I don't know why I thought it was Monterrey Tech. It has been awhile.

That would be great to see. Videos from the 70s. That should be put up in the Film Rm and Tarpon website that would be interesting.

Well....Rio Hondo had a couple of original Donna folks playing for them that knew what TRADITION meant and it spilled over in '98 and '99....just to get things started. My brother and I were instrumental, among others, in what has become a TRADITION in RH. I was RH's first 1,000 yd rusher in over 16 yrs(a milestone at the time) in '98....and my brother was a DE on RH's first playoff team in over 26 years. Before I ever cracked a thousand yds.....THERE WERE far better players that couldn't do the same in the previous 15 yrs. The last RB to do it was Barry Watters in '82.Guys like....Lino Garza,Fred Garza, Mario Menchaca, Xavier Hernandez...etc. But, because I worked hard, made a commitment and something inside me told me I could do something nobody had done before in a longtime. I ran three miles everyday, ran sprints, lifted weights, did agility drills, and prayed. I was fortunate enough to fulfill my goal of being a one thousand yd rusher because of my TEAMMATES. In '98 we were poised to make a run at the district title,IMO, but because of unfortunate events we were left with a 3-7 record that could've been 9-1...with the only loss to Mathis. We played Raymondville close going into the 4th qtr down 14-12....eventually losing 34-12. Then to La Feria 28-20. Lost to Hidalgo 12-0. Beat SR 49-16. Then played PI close...losing 21-14. Lost to Lyford 20-14. And finally beating Progreso 20-12. I arguably started up again the TRADITION of 1,000yd rushers in RH....yet none of the current players know about that. My brother Roger Alaniz(folks in football and powerlifting circles know him.) Helped in beating PI and did his part on the '99 team to reach the playoffs. He was an all-district pick and became a region, state, and national champ in powerlifting. But, IMO, the winning attitude against PI and district started with the '99 team that actually got it done....they're the team that deserves the TOTAL credit. There were great teams back in '77,'82-'83,'88,'92-'93...that had more talent than the '99 team, but they were the resurrection of the BROTHERHOOD that actually started in the '72-'73 seasons....that's right. The BROTHERHOOD now....was alive and well back then. Just ask players from that era. It's good to have been a BOBCAT. Yeah! This book is a great read and all, but what does all this have to do with the topic at hand, which is " PORT ISABEL FOOTBALL HISTORY" just because you mention PI three times in this whole book. It does not make it a relevant post to this topic, so for future reference please start your own topic on RH football history.

The topic is about PI football history...which is tradition. PI had to start somewhere....RH had to start also. So, I believe it's relevant to the topic.

I mean no disrespect to you whatsoever, but the post you made just reeks of "hey, look at us, we want respect too! We're right here *wave frantically* don't ignore us!" Seriously, why post something like that in a PORT ISABEL HISTORY thread when your post has absolutely NOTHING to do with Port Isabel, and everything to do about Rio Hondo, which last time I checked, don't wear Port Isabel blue and white and have their own separate high school. IMO, I found your post very disrespectful and a blatant attempt at a derailment of the thread's topic. I'm pretty sure my fellow Port Isabel posters will agree with me as well. If Rio Hondo is THAT desperate for attention, why not ask WOS87 to start up a "Rio Hondo History" thread? Also, Port Isabel's tradition and Rio Hondo's newfound "tradition" have absolutely nothing to do with each other, which is another reason why your post does not belong in this thread.

You PI folks are hilarious. If u think I'm here looking for RESPECT for my 'Cats? The 'Cats...just like the Tarps....must earn respect every year on the field.
PI's history speaks for PAST ACCOMPLISHMENTS. That's all done and overwith...my 'Cats are the 2007 DC's, but have to earn it again this season.
I will give a RH history lesson only with what I know. Thanks for the idea.

All the references I have just refer to the team played as "Mexico City Consolidated" which I've never heard mention of before or since....
