Miners Score Three Touchdowns in First Scrimmage of the Season

Trevor Vittatoe threw for 101 yards and hit Kris Adams for a nine-yard touchdown pass, and Jeremy Springer directed two scoring drives in UTEP's first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday in Socorro, N.M.

Springer was in at signal-caller when Vernon Frazier ran for a 37-yard touchdown, and again when El Pasoan Josh Flores plunged into the end zone from two yards out.

"I thought there were a lot of good things that happened today. I like the attitude, I like the spirit, and I like the way we ran around and hit," UTEP coach Mike Price said. "Everybody got a lot of opportunities to move up the depth chart. Our receivers did not catch the ball like they've been catching it in practice, but we have a young group of receivers. And unfortunately, that's what happens sometimes. When it's showtime, the young guys can't get it done. So we've got to give these guys opportunities where they feel like it's game experience."

Vittatoe completed 12 of 21 passes, and Springer finished 8 for 12 for 113 yards. Evan Davis and Darrin Moore tied for the team lead with 55 yards receiving, and Frazier was the leading rusher with 63 yards on 10 carries.

"It seems like every time we have a scrimmage, Vernon Frazier comes up with a big play," Price said. "He's that kind of a back. He's a little guy playing in a big man's world. He has a lot of courage and a lot of speed."





UTEP had 424 yards of offense - 309 passing and 115 rushing - in the 100-play scrimmage. Elijah Davis was the leading tackler with five stops, while Ramonte Harris and Eric Reynolds picked off Tim Curry and Kyle Wright respectively.

"Our coverage was pretty good, we ran around and hit each other really good, Jose Martinez kicked well, Kyle Petersen punted well and all of our quarterbacks threw well," Price said. "We just need to catch it better."

The Miners will continue drills in Socorro before returning to El Paso on Thursday.

Wow .. with alitle more than half of the amount of attempts .. he managed to get more yards than Vitatoe and was free from interception... pretty amazing stats their... This could be the year of the Springers... I hope Jeremy has his chance this year... No doubt he will take the oppertunity and make it a lasting one... Justin was given his oppertunity while Jeremy was redshirted.. now a a Freshman if given the chance Jeremy will open up eyes in the coaching staff...
