Now that the pools are released, the predicitions can begin!! Today we continue with the final part of the 5A-4A Division which will get going Friday afternoon!! Who does the staff think will advance??

TexasPrepInsider.com will be live at the 7 on 7 State Tournament for all three days at Texas A&M and today we bring you Part One of pool predictions and analysis from the 5A-4A Division! Matt Stepp, Matt Diggs Alan Zepeda, Kerry Cooper and Jay Darneal’s pool picks are shown!

POOL I

The Woodlands

Wylie

Defending champion Georgetown stands out in this pool, but this is another group that 1-4 is very tough. Edcouch-Elsa is the early favorite as they have blitzed through all comers this summer. Wylie is one of the top offensive teams in the state in 7 on 7 and they’ll be a tough out. The Woodlands is being overlooked but with the talent the Highlanders bring to the table they could be the ones to advance to the Championship bracket.

For those of you up on their 7 on 7 history you know that Baytown Lee is a perennial power and consistent title contender. However this year, Baytown Lee nearly didn’t qualify for the tournament this year. Stony Point could be the team to watch, as the Tigers are super-talented and they’ve got a big time QB who can lead them. Plano West is a bit of unknown, but the Wolves can play with the big boys. The sleeper in this pool could be Weslaco out of the Valley, they’ve flown under the radar with Edcouch-Elsa taking the attention away from Weslaco.

Can a team making their first trip to the State Tournament be a legit title contender? Well Arlington might be able to make a claim since they won last year’s JV State Tournament. Cy Fair is a State Tournament regular, but they don’t have as much big name talent as in the past. Mercedes made a good accounting of themselves in last year’s State Tournament, and with their unique style of play they’ll cause problems. Schertz-Clemens won the Alamo Heights SQT, but not being from a 7 on 7 hotbed they are a relative unknown.

Nice they "predict" all 3 valley teams to advance to the championship bracket. But i know for a fact our rgv teams have their goals set higher then that. So hopefully our guys can go up there and do some damage, best of all they gain some great experience from all this. Good luck to the panthers and the rest of the rgv teams. I know weslaco is heading off a lil later this morning. I believe la villa left yesterday.

Notes: Georgetown, the reigning champs, will have a tough time getting out of this pool after graduating last year's state MVP, Morgan Mickan ... The Woodlands and Edcouch-Elsa were in the same pool a year ago, with TW beating E-E, 26-20 ... Wylie didn't make it last summer, but strong-armed QB Monk will make sure the Pirates don't suffer from the absence.

Notes: QB McKissic (2,009 yards passing) helped engineer Stony Point's improvement from 3-7 in 2006 to 9-3 last year ... Weslaco's not as bad off after losing RB Mishak Rivas, as QB De Leon threw 21 TD passes last year ... Both Plano West and Baytown Lee (the only two-time state 7-on-7 champ) are using the summer sessions to break in new QBs after losing last year's starters to graduation.

Notes: Arlington missed out on the '07 tourney, but returning means AISD has four of its five 5A schools in, as Martin joins AHS, Lamar and Bowie ... Pool M is the only in the DI bracket with two 4A programs, but Clemens and Mercedes shouldn't be considered heavy underdogs, as both boast excellent RBs: Clemens' Ross and Mercedes' Trevino ... speaking of RBs, Cy Fair replaces not just Sam McGuffie, but also Wesley Cobb, who signed with Air Force in February; McGuffie landed at Michigan.

La Villa did go, they got rocked 34-0 by Crane, 54-14 by Rockdale, 34-6 by Celina, and lost to Navasota.
