Fishing is alright... You just gotta make sure you go with the right person. ;D or the right fishing guide.

After a week and a half off the water, I was full of joy this morning to be back in the bay. As I came out of the mouth of the arroyo, a huge flock of seagulls were picking shrimp off the top of the water on the south side of bird island. Most of the time when this happens in this area, schooly trout are around. Occasionally though, some nice size trout can be had. Not this time. After catching a couple of 10-14 inch trout, I moved out of there. I headed south east to an area that I usually like to wade during the summer months. After pushing several fish, I came off plane and went at it. The first wade proved to be worthless. Only one small red was caught along with several Skippy Peanut-butter jacks. I moved a little further south and tried it again. Not much better. One keeper red (25") came out along with a few more skip jacks. We decided to change strategies and go for some trout before hitting the east side sand action around 11:00. I tried a few generally good trout holes, but only one keeper trout came out. By this time, I'm getting a little frustrated, but was very confident the sand action would save the day once again. WRONG! We only had 3 fish come our way in about a 45 minute span. Each one had lock jaw and wanted nothing to do with our lures. Moving out of the area I was going check out the action of the west side, but as I was headed that way. I came across several fish just east of Duncan house. We drifted that area for about an hour and landed 3 keeper reds (plus 5 rat reds) and 1 trout. Not a stellar day by any means. As I pulled out the white flag of surrender for the day, I was headed back in when all of a sudden I came across a huge school of reds. I came back around and immediately all three of us were on. Three nice 26-27" fat reds came aboard. I tried looking for the school again, but to no avail. It was gone. We came back to the dock w/ 6 reds and 2 trout. After filleting the fish, a good friend and fellow guide Rick Hartman was waiting for some clients to show. We chatted awhile and then both of notices something big along the edge just west of the dock. We went to check it out and found 5-8 HUGE drum feeding. Just for fun we decided to throw a Gulp Crab in to see if one would take. Sure enough, after about 10 casts, one inhaled it and the fight was on! It didn't last long, Rick thought my braided line was stronger than it was and tried to put a hurt on the fish. The line busted after about a minute fight. It was all for fun anyway. A few minutes later, I hooked up to one and it came off after about 30 seconds. Fun day overall. Till next time.
